The Stars Are Blind
Luna-centric; Onew/Luna; fluff; highschool!au; 1753 words
In which Luna thinks horoscope schmoroscope, it can’t deal with anything in life.

Usually Luna can’t be bothered with what Amber advises her to do. Especially since Amber’s been away for far too long to know what’s good for her. Or the rest, for that matter. But this, this, Amber had been going on about for the longest time. So when Amber starts again on how Luna should try reading her horoscope every morning before she washes up, Luna gives in.

“You’ll need to download this application into your Blackberry. Now,” Amber nags and then snatches away Luna’s phone to download it herself. After a few clicks and dings!, Amber slides the phone across the dining table, back to Luna.

“You have to read it every morning, the predictions are uncannily true. And even if you don’t like this kind of stuff,” Amber pauses to roll her eyes, “It’s still pretty fun to read.”

Luna merely shrugs and attempts to look interested before sauntering off, leaving Amber staring googly-eyed at her own phone.

Dear Leo,
Today calls for many new things to be learnt or new skills to be acquired or maybe new secrets to be revealed.
Perhaps if you calls it quits with your stubborn nature, more might be obtained from today. It’s okay, you’ll definitely get something out of today whether you decide to or not!

Luna groans and stretches for a good minute before scoffing at the phone in her hand.

“Honestly, why do I bother?” she wonders out loud and walks into the bathroom shaking her head.

By early afternoon, during school hours, she’s determined to delete the stupid application for so many reasons.

It’s taking up so much space.
The notifications are never-ending.
I don’t find it fun.
The font is ugly.

Her excuses get from bad to worse but it just annoys her. Like it’s trying to make out everything that’s going to happen in her life. Like its some freaky remote control she never found a proper use for.

But amidst her thoughts, she overhears voices coming from janitor’s closet. Female voices and they were definitely not the janitor or his tea time club.

“Please, she’s awfully quiet. I don’t like her either but that doesn’t mean we should -“
“Shut up, you hate her, I hate her. We have enough of us to form a club, ‘IHL’. Perfect!”
“IHL?”
“Keep up, will you? The ‘I Hate Luna’ Club, I’m brilliant.”

Luna staggers backwards off the door of the closet, confused more than angry. She has the good mind to rip the door open and give the two girls in there each a piece of her quiet mind. But what confuses her more is the fact that the horoscope prediction she read this morning? Well for most part, it had rung true.

Dear Leo,
Heads up! Today will be surprises, surprises and more surprises. Or at least the people around you think they’re giving you one.

Luna feels obliged to scoff again but hesitates, instead tossing her phone to the corner of her bed. She climbs down from her upper bunk, only to be greeted by her roommate, Sulli. Except that Sulli’s face was staring right up at her, a creepily huge smile spread across her face. Taken aback, Luna lands harshly on her feet with a loud thump!

“Guess what! Krys is coming home today! T-O-D-A-Y, TODAY!” Sulli shrieks, obviously overlooking Luna’s pain.

“Today? Why? She’s done visiting her American friends already?” Luna asks in all honesty while flexing her toes.

There is no response though, because Sulli’s busy scurrying around the dorm, picking up all her clothes and old forgotten socks and what not. Luna registers this as ‘Surprise #1’ in her head. If it was only this throughout the day, that horoscope app was as good as gone.

*

Thank goodness it was the weekend because Luna was exhausted, literally, from all the projects, the school events she was handling and just ‘babysitting’ Sulli was enough to kill. She decides to walk over to the supermarket to grab comfort food (read: Ben & Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk) before turning in although it was merely 3pm.

Besides, I need all the rest I can get before Krystal gets back and hell breaks loose.

She nods, satisfied at her reasoning and continues walking, almost to the street crossing when she notices someone out of the corner of her eye. Someone familiar. Someone like Amber. And well, someone else but she didn’t recognize him.

No wait - him? Amber’s with a guy?

Luna backs away into the alley behind her, hiding in the shadows, waiting for the pair to pass. True enough, Amber strolls by; arms linked with a Korean boy, looking much like her own age, leaving Luna puzzled beyond words. Amber dating was fine, but Amber dating without telling her was purely unbelievable.

She watches them walk further and further away from her, laughter tinkling in the air. The very same air Luna felt love was mingling in and where she stood, mouth agape, breathing in. Unconsciously, her mind registered this as ‘Surprise #2’.

*

It’s close to 9pm and Sulli sits patiently in the living room, eyes on the television but everything else focused on the footsteps outside the door or the ringing of the doorbell or any sign that Krystal was back actually. Victoria’s still cooking and Amber wasn’t back yet but Luna wasn’t going to ask why either.

“MISS ME?” Krystal bursts through the front door and all three girls in the dorm jump.

Sulli is the first to squeal and run in her direction, squeezing Krystal in a suffocating hug.
“How did you get in?” Victoria asks, hugging the girl standing at the door with arms full of paper bags.
“You guys never put the spare key anywhere else besides under the welcome mat.”

Luna joins them in hugging Krystal and soon they were all on the floor, tearing the paper bags open. Or at least Sulli was. Krystal directs them to their own paper bag but Sulli’s found something else to play with.

“What’s this, Krys?”
“Gobstoppers, they’re all yours if you want them.”
“Are they edible or something?”
“They’re hard candy with layers and layers, that is, until you reach the soft centre. It’s nice.”

*

Amber’s still not home at 11pm and everyone’s getting worried especially Luna. Just as she’s about to call Amber, she receives a message.

Don’t worry about me; I’m just studying with a friend till late today.
Will be back soon! (: (23.11)
-Amber

A friend? (23.12)
-Luna

Oh and btw, I saw you in the alley today.
Don’t jump to conclusions; he’s just a close friend! (23.12)
-Amber

Luna drops her phone.
Hello, ‘Surprise #3’.

Dear Leo,
Yesterday must’ve been a lot to take in, but no worries, Life is fair in weird ways.
Take a breather, today will be pretty smooth.

Today Luna takes her phone with her, carefully keeping it in her pocket because she needs that breather, that ‘smooth’ today.

The dorm is awfully quiet and she doesn’t know where to peg her suspicions. She goes into the kitchen and finds a post-it on the fridge door.

Sulli and Krys are out shopping
Amber came back at 1am, she’s dead-tired in her room
I’ll be out grocery shopping
-Vic

The silence was well explained. And this was definitely paving the path to a relaxed day ahead. Luna cracks a couple of eggs and scrambles them to perfection before settling down at the dining table with toast, jam and a jug of fresh orange juice.

This is the life.

Her afternoon was well-spent in the park reading and watching the joggers pass with their dogs and her evening was simply brilliantly spent walking down the pretty little shops on Dong Dae Mun Street, albeit the slight drizzle and overcrowded area.

Once again, the horoscope application had proved itself worthy of keeping.

Dear Leo,
CRACK. There goes your stubborn outer shell. Maybe something one of your friends or family said will make more sense today too.

For the first time is days, Luna doesn’t know what to make of it. Utter nonsense, she feels, but cannot bring herself to get rid of the app anymore. So instead of questioning the predictions, she makes her way out of the room to join the rest for breakfast.

*

The whole day seemed to have flown by so fast. School and then back to the dorm and then project work and then oh my goodness it’s 10 already? Feeling the need to stay up overnight to finish her much overdue homework, she walks downstairs to the café in the corner to grab a steaming cup of cappuccino.

The strong aroma of coffee beans and chocolate hit her when she pushes open the glass door. The welcome bell tinkles and as usual there are only a couple of customers seated inside, sipping silently on their hot mugs. She loved the atmosphere; she loved the smells, the silence, the simplicity.

Luna goes up to the counter to order her coffee and then fumbles with her wallet for change, effectively spilling a dozen copper coins onto the floor. She sighs and squats down to pick the coins up. Suddenly, an extra pair of hands joins her and she’s surprised since practically all the people there seemed like they wouldn’t be interested to help.

She looks up; wanting to thank the person but a nametag greets her eyes first.

Lee Jin Ki
Manager

And then her eyes meet his. Chocolate brown, warm yet piercing. Melting her insides and -

CRACK. There goes her stubborn outer shell.

She forgets what she wants to say and finds herself gulping saliva down her throat which had gotten so dry in mere seconds. Lee Jin Ki smiles and Luna feels like she can’t breathe anymore. She clears her throat and tries to look away but her eyes refuse to and besides, that smile, that gorgeous smile. She felt like -

Hard candy with layers and layers, that is, until you reach the soft centre.

“Thank you,” Luna blurts out while remembering Krystal’s explanation of those sweets Sulli had played with.
(What were they called? Gob-stoopers? Right.)

*

Horoscope schmoroscope Luna thinks, smiling, as he offers to carry her piping hot mug of cappuccino back to her table.

She doesn’t need anything predicting her life from now on. She never really needed it. She whips her phone out and looks at the application one more time.
