hi, I'm currently a freshman at Northwestern University and am considering transfering out next year. one of the places I'm looking at is of course Stanford. I'm just wondering if you guys could give me your impressions of the place since the two months that you've been there. I'd especially like to hear if you think the school is too small/big, ( Read more... )

The people here are amazing. I haven't run into any ideological problems with the people that are around me, mostly because I don't really look for that stuff in people. Everyone's just so chill and happy to be here... I don't know, I just love the atmosphere here personally. Every weekend you can definitely count on a frat somewhere having a party, so there's definitely stuff to do.

Classes are a different story, but it certainly depends on what your focus is. To tell the truth, the introductory techie courses are surprisingly subpar to me, but the fuzzy classes seem good if you're into humanities and whatnot.

Hmm... political. It seems that everyone here is pretty liberal, though there are some loud conservatives. my impression may be a little biased, because I'm involved in a women's rights mailing list and I get a ton of emails from them saying "vote vote vote!" but it seems like the campus is pretty politically active. there's always something to do on the weekends, whether you're into the party scene or not. the workload is as intense as you make it, from what I can see - that may seem really ambiguous, but for my classes, the workload is challenging but not impossible. no one is competitive and mean-spirited! I've never run into someone who is not supportive of others' efforts. grades aren't generally discussed, but if you're having trouble, there's always places to go for help.

overall, I LOVE it here. I can't imagine a better place to be. good luck with your process! email if you have any more questions: kcp@stanford.edu

this place in general is just awesome. the atmosphere is so great and relaxing. the people are extremely tolerant on both sides, very respectful, but if you're looking for a political atmosphere, you can definitely find it. as for competition, there are going to be people who are all about their grades and have no life whatsoever, but i think the majority of the people here are really chill and aren't competitive. on the weekends, there's always frat parties, and you can usually find pretty interesting stuff to do. and you can always go off campus if you're not too lazy. what you do on the weekends is basically up to you and how willing you are to go and find stuff. the workload is not so bad, depending on how hard you make it. if you wanna take 20 units a quarter because you like having stuff to do, that's cool, but if you wanna take it easier, you can do that too. it's not so bad. and finally, i think the general campus community is close and tight-knit. dorm atmosphere really adds to the community and the people here are wonderful ( ... )
