Christmas Eve arrives in the blink of an eye. And the surrogate Donaghy family is expected any minute.
The twins are setting and decorating the table. Jack is in the kitchen in master chef mode. Liz and Gracie are racing to wrap the last of the presents.
"Gracie!" Amelia shouts as she runs into the kitchen, straight into the arms of her favorite babysitter. Jonathan and Michael are right on her heels, arms full of gifts and food.
Jonathan crosses to Jack, hovering over the stove. A huge smile on his face, he presents a small, cheerfully decorated box. "Merry Christmas, sir."
"Damn it, Jonathan. I told you to stop calling me 'sir' a decade ago." Jack takes the present and warmly embraces his trusted assistant. "Thank you. Merry Christmas."
Amelia keeps tugging on Gracie's arm, steadfast in her mumbled request. "Laneplane! Laneplane!"
"What does she want?" Liz inquires.
"She loves it when Lane holds her up in the air and flies her around," Gracie replies sheepishly. "'The Lane Plane.' That's what we call it."
"Where is Lane? Isn't he coming? We've got a present for him, too," Michael chirps.
"No, he's...um, going up north to his Dad's for the holidays."
"Oh,” Michael says, overtly surprised. “How long is he going to be gone? You two are still going to babysit for New Years, right?"
"Oh, yeah. I'll be there. I don't know about Lane...I've got to double check with him..." Gracie quickly picks up Amelia and takes off towards the Christmas tree.
Michael glances at Jonathan, before quietly asking Liz, "What’s going on? Did they break up or something?"
Liz curses under her breath. She hoped this would be a non-issue by now. "No, they're okay. Um, could you guys give Jack and me a second?"
