Summary: Chapter 66. This time, when he runs into his ex-wife, it's not for show.
Walking through the lobby at intermission, Julia’s arm looped through his, a familiar voice catches his ear.
“Johnny?”
No one but Bianca calls him that. And that’s exactly who’s behind them when they turn around.
She scoops in, kisses his cheek. “Johnny! How are you? It’s been ages.” Then introduces her guest, “This is my fiancée, François Bernard.”
“Fiancée?”
“We’re getting married in the spring. Back in Paris.”
“Congratulations. Third time’s a charm, I presume. Isn’t that what they say?”
They share a tensive, uneasy chuckle. Her eyes narrow menacingly at the sight of Julia. “It’s good to see your tastes have not changed, John. Even after all these years. Things must not have worked out with -- What was her name?”
“Liz.”
“Yes, that was it. That’s too bad. I liked her.”
Jack calmly smiles at Julia and winks. “Bianca, this is Julia. My daughter.”
The resulting look of shock on Bianca’s face is utterly priceless. With perfect timing, Julia chimes in, “What a pleasure to meet you. We’ve -- my sisters and I -- have heard so much about you.”
“You were still here in New York when Grace was born, weren’t you?”
Bianca aggressively clears her throat. “Yes, of course. I saw the birth announcement in the Times.”
“Julia and Isabelle joined us a few years later.” He makes zero effort to restrain his beaming smile, as he holds up his left hand, drawing Bianca’s eyes to his wedding band. “15 years, can you believe it?”
She can not. Her forced smile and kind words poorly disguise her seething internal anger. He actually feels a bit sorry for her, so backs down quickly, allowing her a swift exit.
“Oh. My. God. Dad, did that seriously just happen?”
Steering them back towards their seats, “Yes, my dear, I believe it did.”
