Summary: Chapter 65. Jack's plans for New Year's change.
Jack finds Liz in her office writing, surprises her with a stunningly gorgeous, gift-wrapped red dress.
“Do you like it? I saw it in the window and thought I’d...enjoy you in it very much.”
Liz smiles sheepishly, her cheeks becoming as red as the dress. He comes around the desk, sitting on the edge before leaning in to kiss her softly. “I love that you still blush at the drop of a hat, Lemon. Even after all these years.”
Kissing him back: “It’s beautiful, Jack. Thank you.”
“I thought perhaps you’d wear it New Year’s Eve?”
She rises from her chair, settling between his legs, his arms sliding low around her waist. “About that...What if I stayed home this year?”
“But we always see the Philharmonic on New Year’s.”
“What if you took Julia instead?”
“I thought she was going to that sleepover thing with Isabelle.”
“Apparently Isabelle was the only one invited. Julia says she doesn’t care and didn’t even want to go, but I feel bad. Gracie’ll be gone, too. I don’t want Julia stuck at home alone.”
“She won’t be. We can be back from the concert well before midnight.”
“True, but ringing in the New Year at home with your parents isn’t really...cool. Trust me, I know. That’s how I spent every New Year’s until college.” Then deflecting with a laugh: “I didn’t think I’d have to worry about this kind of stuff. Not with half their DNA coming from you.”
Though he believes she’s overreacting, rather than arguing, he hugs her.
“So it’s okay if Julia goes with you instead?”
“A gorgeous young girl on my arm? People will think I’ve taken a mistress. It’ll be fabulous.”
Liz pokes him but laughs, whispers, “Thank you,” as he holds her a bit longer.
