Brilliant. Especially effective in that nothing was overstated, but you can clearly see how this experience, and the things Winona Kirk said at the end, affected what sort of officer Christopher Pike became, and his statements to Jim Kirk later. I can really buy both her various and changing reactions and her sons' instinctive anger and protectiveness. I got the impression they've been hounded by Starfleet personnel or the Press a lot over the years. It takes a tough, tough woman to face that sort of pain with such honesty, and for a Starfleet cadet you don't even know, no less. I hope Winona felt Cadet Pike did her husband's and Captain Robeau's memories justice with his dissertation. I can imagine he sent her a copy, although maybe she didn't read it right away.

Very effective and well-thought-out. Thanks for posting!

Even before I wrote this story, this not-entirely-confident young!Pike was living in my brain, and as soon as I got the prompt I knew that this was (one of?) his formative experience(s).

He definitely sent her a copy. I hope I get the chance to continue writing, and soon, because I have the feeling these two characters are going to be yelling/laughing at me until I do.

I liked this very much - Pike's awkwardness; Winona's refusal to admit she's not entirely together - and I love the way what she says at the end is what he uses to recruit Jim into Starfleet.

WOW right back, !!!!1!keyboardsmash OMG THANKYOUS!!

The boys really just burst their way into the story and did their thing; that part practically wrote itself, and I'm so glad the characterization worked.

You know, bog-standard trophies are overrated. May I request a butter-sculpture of a trophy? XD

I love your wobbly comment spam, and I think you (and okay, maybe also the very insistent voices of Pike and Winona in my head) have just convinced me that I can't stop yet.

OKAY. OKAY OKAY OKAY, you wrote Cadet Pike and Winona and I have been wanting to read this fic for forever and this is so fucking well done, and lovely, and clear, and you get infinite bonus points because the sheer awesome of this has obliterated my previous headcanon on the subject. AND I AM A STUBBORN PERSON. It is not easy to obliterate my headcanon!

(Be making more?)

this is absolutely lovely. I love the picture you've painted of Winona. not completely broken, but still brittle and shaken after all these years, and frankly that probably won't ever change. and young awkward Pike is fantastic, because you can see the glimpses of who he will become but he's got so much more growing up to do. I imagine the words that Winona said, words he spoke to Jim later on really influenced him once he himself was out in space.

wonderful story.

Thank you! Finding Winona's balance between grief and strength was such a challenge, and I'm glad it came through. Also that young awkward Pike worked for you :). I like him a lot.
