I'm heartily impressed! Winona's grief and regret, Pike's drive to understand more than just the academic facts, and your depictions of the boys are heartbreakingly real. This is a poignant and personal look at military service in general, phrased in perfect harmony with ST. Beautiful!

Is it strange that I actually never thought of this in relation to the larger military world / modern lens / etc? I'm thrilled that it worked in that way. Thanks!

wow, this is amazing. i'm kind of in love with winona, a lot of the time i have a hard time picturing her older and as part of jim's life as he grows up, but here it's perfectly rendered and she's so vivid and real. i love pike's uncertainty, the way he got way more than he bargained for, and everything in this that foreshadows the movie. fantastic fic!

Thanks! I hope I'll get to continue this fic one day, and see where this Winona goes and how her relationship with Jim changes - I definitely can't see her staying in Iowa for much longer.

This says 'you can't possibly understand'. He doesn't. But he wants to.

I read this and my brain just went 'Nngh. YES.' because, of course, he will understand. It was a gorgeous moment that grounded me in the piece even as it kind of broke my heart a little.

Beautifully written, stunningly characterized, and the pacing was excellent. Thank you for writing this.

Wow, thanks so much! Yeah - he definitely will.

I'm looking forward to writing or maybe reading Pike fic one of these days dealing with all the levels of Kelvin-related and loss-related understanding he goes through in the movie. Especially when he's heading over to the Narada - you know he's perfectly aware that his circumstances nearly exactly parallel Robau's.
