What was your deposit? I know they can charge for "reasonable wear and tear"... besides that, landlord / tenant rights are in the Texas Property Code.. section 92 (I let it all flow out of my head after finals last semster). I had to fight with my first complex in Austin over $600+ because they said I had hedgehogs living in my carpet (!!!) or some such nonsense. I ended up having to contest it on my credit report less than a year ago (got it taken off with ease.. they had no claim).

Are you going to be coming through Ft. Worth on your way out of town? Not that you'd want to do lunch... but I thought I'd offer.

deposit $375. which i don't expect to see again, which is ok. my lease is not a standard TAA lease- it has all sorts of bizarre and disturbing clauses, no buyout clause, and is generally of questionable legality. so i made a settlement offer, which i expect him to take. if he doesn't, he gets nothing. if it does go to the credit bureaus, i think i'm in pretty good standing, and the landlord in question has a reputation with the BBB longer than i cared to read through.

I've never dealt with a slumlord (except for Slumlord Bob, who is a whole other entity) but if you have a digital camera, take pictures of each room and the state in which you left the place. That would be your proof should he send you a bill and having that would possibly mean he'd back down.
