Definite yes on Jennifer Grey. Her nose was her most distinctive feature, and now she's unrecognizable. In fact, there was a short lived sitcom in which she played herself, and this became one of the running gags of the show. However, her smile is recognizable, if you know what to look for.

I do portraiture as both a sketch artist and a photo retouch artist. In some ways, that advice is correct, and in some ways it is way off. People actually want their flaws removed, for the most part. Some are wise enough to realize that their flaws are part of them, but most want an idealized version of the subject (especially their kids). When I first started at my current job (photo retouch for high school seniors), one customer asked me to remove every freckle, mole and scar from her boy. I managed to do it without making him look like he was made of plastic, but I still refer to her as "Plastic Boy's Mom" three years later.
