I am with Noel on this one; The fashion of the later period of E-gal was frakkin' LOONEY! Allegory or not, you never know if they just slapped some sort of freakish en-samb' together to make a splash at Court. The convention of the 'all dark colored' courtiers in a gaggle of hoops is a bit of a Ren-ism...

Yeah, but this is one of the Queen. She's shown as a young woman, with all those life-like ears and eyes (as Doc just pointed out). While the gown and veil may have been real, who knows about that wrap of body parts.

The all dark courtiers is a definite theatrical choice, so the Queen would stand out in her lighter color. Thankfully small faire around here doesn't hold to that choice.

Okay, that painting is odd. Notice the eyes and ears on the skirting. Those aren't painted as if they are embroidered or something. They're painted as living eyes and ears, and all of the eyes are looking towards her face. Creepy.

Yep... that's why it is considered an allegorical painting of her knowing all and seeing all (if I remember what I read long ago correctly), or maybe it was her spies hearing and seeing everything. She's also shown as a young Queen, even as she was nearing her death. It is a very creepy painting.

I am fascinated by her pearled veil, since Pat wants something similar for next year's faire.
