Norris is where I got the original AoB pattern, and he has it shaped. He also offers the beguin pattern as the rectangle, that is folded and pinned into place.
I am going to re-read that section of his book again.
And I do understand what you mean by the straight and curve of the edges doing the work simply, without all the fuss. It really does make more sense.
I think to test them out on real people, I am going to make up the three styles I have so far, 2 shaped, one rectangle, and add in the half-circle hood, and put them on people for this event, then take photos and see which one does the best job of looking like the images.
I definitely think they may be a half circle at the back. In some of the pics there are some really good "pleats" but the kind that "fall" naturally like a huge circular cloak from the shoulders. So I would be surprised if that pattern doesn't work.
I'm not so sure about either one (rectangle or semicircle); the back "drape" doesn't look right. However, it's only a yard and a half of material, either way, and trying it is the easiest way to see.
