Remnant organization

A quick question for you costumers and sewers out there who have tamed their stash, or at least developed a good idea on how to do so.

I've been working on taming and organizing my stash, measuring, cutting swatches, sticking them in a binder in color & yardage order, putting the fabric into boxes and bins, etc. But I've now found a few several ( Read more... )

That swatch book is an awesome idea!! I just took masking tape and wrote on it what was in the tub then stuck it to the tub.

I used to do it on small 5x8 cards, but that wasn't working as well for me, and I only had a few done up. The larger swatch book is easier for some reason, and the form I was given, and have modified a bit, will help keep track of projects, too. I will post the blank forms in a bit, once I have the bugs out and am happy with it.

I would have done the swatch on the tub, but my kids like to play in my sewing room, and I could just imagine finding a bunch of swatches all around the house.

The swatch book is great for long yardage(as long as you update it when you use any-oh, did I just give away how I sabotaged mine?), but for small pieces I don't think it's worth the effort. I use a combination of flatfolding the bigger pieces and leaving them visible (on a bookshelf or transparent tub) and roll quite small pieces together along with other leftovers from the same project and store in bags labeled according to their original project.
So far even this amount of work has been silly as I don't use them. I'm thinking I'll donate the small bits to a quilter or a daycare and take my chances that I will never use them (or at least not often enough to make it worth organizing and storing tyem).
P.S. I thought your new kirtle was lovely, time has just been running away from me.

Sounds good... I've been pondering putting the small ones on a shelf or bin, rolled up.

And thanks.

I have the long lengths that aren't wool or silk on bolts - stacked on book shelves or in the closet on the shelves. The silk and wool are folded and put in the china cabinet and a trunk (sorted by content) and then I fold the bigger pieces - about a yard or two are folded and put on shelves.... then the smallest pieces - remnets are rolled and tied and then thrown into a bin. My mom uses an old coke flat that she stacks the small pieces on and then sorts by color (but her's are only 100%cotton since she's a quilter).

Thanks. I have some of my fabrics on bolts in the closet, my wool in a space bag with herbs (nasty moths), and am not sure what to do with some of my silks, but they are folded up for now.

I like the rolled remnants in a bin idea. Thanks.

I don't bother keeping scraps anymore, unless they get immediately added to some other project. Scraps, even large-ish ones, just take up too much room and I use them so rarely that it's not worth it to me to keep 'em.

I used to give mine to my Mom, but have just been collecting them since she passed on. I am thinking of using dravon's idea on what to keep and what to give away.

My take... dravon September 6 2008, 01:32:45 UTC
If the material is something that I look at and think "eeuu", it's in the trash or in the "practice quilt-batting" pile and no card is made for it. It also doesn't go into my scraps pile because I think the material is really ugly and I really don't want it ( ... )

I like your idea on how to deal with each fabric scrap. I will have to do some sorting with that in mind. Thank you.

Yes, it is. That was my Dusty, and I had left the drier open after emptying one day. He was about 7-8 months old and thought that was the absolute BEST place to lay in ambush for one of the other cats to walk by. He's in "wait for it .... waaaaaiiiit for it..." mode in this picture. It's one of my better images of him showing his personality, and it's a cute and playful image. At least I think so.
