Japan marks anniversary of Hiroshima atomic bombMy dad would remind me every year about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Well... my Mom hardly mentioned but a few times that Hiroshima (and then Nagasaki) was bombed before the end of the war ( Read more... )

Even at its closest point, Hokkaido is over 600 miles from Hiroshima, and slightly farther from Nagasaki. There would have been no immediate detectable nuclear radiation over such a distance from either blast, except perhaps some sort of EMP effect, and even that wouldn't cause more than a brief moment of static over a radio. I can't find any fallout maps, but both blasts were airbursts, i.e. detonated well above the ground, so they didn't generate much in the way of fallout. Even if there were such fallout, it would have taken a day or two to reach such a distance, and would have had to have traversed the populated length of the main island of Japan to reach Hokkaido. In any event, I'd respectfully guess your mom acquired her freckles naturally.

One of the first books of my own that I received as a child was Hiroshima No Pika . I got it from my Uncle John - a pacifist and Unitarian minister - who thought it good that I see this event from the perspective of another child. I was already going to Beyond War meetings once a week with my parents and was pretty well convinced that I wasn’t going to live to be an adult if R. Reagan got a chance to poke ‘the big red shiny button’.

To say that I hate nuclear proliferation and the use of depleted uranium weaponry is an understatement.

Fear is a cage used by those in charge to keep the people they lead in their power.

Communication is a key that unlocks that cage.

It’s good for us to speak out.

When I was estate shopping I found some beautiful china, it was a full set for 12 place settings. The lady nearby told me that it was on of the last sets made before the bombing of the factory in Nagasaki.

I felt immediate goose pimples as I held them.

They are beautiful and I purchased it the set for 40.00.

Every time I look at it all I can think of is about this day.
