How do you go about dying things? I have been playing with the idea of re-dying some of my black clothes that have faded - but am leery of doing it in the washing machine since I don't want all my clothes to be effected.

Dyeing is easy. sstormwatch April 2 2007, 22:56:04 UTC
I would suggest you get Rit dyes, and then follow the simple directions for dyeing with it in your washing machine. After you are done dyeing, you then wash off the excess dye from those clothes, and rinse a few more times (2-4x), including using a fabric softener.

While your newly dyed things are in the dryer, you fill up the washing machine with warm water, and some bleach (at least a cup). Agitate for a bit, then allow the tub to sit for awhile before letting it complete its cycle (including rinse). I also put in an old white towel that I use in the bleach cycle to clean up any spilled dyes that are around the upper rim, the lid, or anywhere else that the water alone can't reach. I then let that old towel agitate with the bleach to clean it up.

And then I usually make the first wash load after that whole dyeing process some colored stuff that matches the old dye, just in case. However, I haven't had any extra dyes rub off onto other clothes, yet.
