Dyeing, and bad fabric surprise

Mar 30, 2007 18:21

I made the whole 60 minutes of dyeing without loosing the dye batch! {whew!}

I hope it comes out nice, I really do. Overdyeing over an existing color makes me nervous. And for fun I also added in a small bit of the cream & gold trim I was using, just to see what happens to it.

While I was waiting for the dye bath, I just covered the hat form with its cotton fleece cover, in a nice dark blue. I will need to glue down the overhang later, once the main area sets. I also need more rubber cement, so I am thinking I will get the big can of it next time, since I plan on making more hats soon.

{time passes}

Well... hmmmm... I took a look at the fabric now that the dye bath is done and . It is NOT 100% COTTON!! It's only part cotton and part something else, although my burn test showed no beading, and it acted like mercerized cotton. So, only part of my fabric came out a nice deep blue, and the rest is that mint green/goldy look. I won't know how good or bad it will look until I am done rinsing and drying it. But right now, I am thinking that I may use this for my next kirtle front and sleeves, or maybe the gown! But not for the jacket I wanted to do. Hmmm... I will take a photo of it tomorrow in the sunlight, and ponder what to do.

I know, I should have test dyed a swatch, but I didn't think of it until after the last batch was gone.

And thinking about it, I wonder what fiber it could be in there. It didn't bead, so its not poly. Rayon would have dyed. I wonder if it is viscose? No, not viscose, as it would also have dyed (duh, rayon is viscose). It also would have dyed some if it was silk or wool, just not as deeply. So, this is not a natural fiber of any sort, although it burned like mercerized cotton. Maybe it is acrylic? Hmmm... not happy with this, although the colors... it may be ok after all. We shall see.
