FFG workshop weekend.

Well, I had a grand time this weekend, at the FFG workshop learning how to color on modern fabrics (read polyester, nylon, and others) with dye colored paper and a hot iron. It was like spending a weekend in preschool coloring outside of any lines all over again! I don't know if I will ever use this type of dyeing techniques, but it was fun, I got ( Read more... )

It actually was older dye papers the artist had already, since she didn't want us all getting dirty playing with dye. Some people went outside and sprayed new stuff onto paper to use, but I couldn't see all of us doing that.

It was disperse dyeing, which you can find here:
http://www.prochemical.com/catalog/disperse.htm

She just uses a small amount of the dye (1/4 teaspoon or less) in a bottle of warm water, then sprayed, dripped, splattered or even painted onto paper. Then you turn the paper, or small bits of paper, on top of a modern synthetic fabric, cover with a plain sheet of paper, and use a warm-hot iron and iron away! When you are done, wash the fabric to remove excess dyes, then dry and iron flat if it needs it.
