What a Rip-Off!

Some of my friends know that I am in the midst of a project to archive my music collection. For those who have seen the number of CDs that involves, they will know that it is no mean feat. Let's just say that I am still in my preliminary stages of ripping, and I have 175 GB of data (now you know why I have more than 1 TB of disc space at home).

What I have also found, much to my frustration, is that some of my CDs will no longer play, or rip. They have simply faded into oblivion. What do I mean? It means that the silvery aluminum surface that contains all the information on a CD, has faded to give a transparent (or near transparent) disc!

Let me say that it has only happened to my old discs (from the 1980s), and seem to have one major culprit: Discovery Systems, an old CD-pressing company. So, who said a CD was forever? What frustrates me, is not so much that I will have to buy another CD, but that many are so rare, that replacements are not easily found in Singapore. Will probably have to go on amazon.com to look for them!
