At my weight they'd have to be damn good shoes. I was thinking of that, but just, when can i fit in running. Besides, I can have delussions of being a certain Marathon Man.
Swimming isn't really an option. Biking I think has helped but the season for me is ending soon regardless. Hiking I like, and over varied terrain is actually a good brain workout too, but it's like pulling teeth trying to get anyone to hike with me, so I've given up.
Thank you for the offer, but I loathe trainers, the angle is too steep forward for me, puts too much strain on my arms, and the rigidity freaks me out.
It hit the point where it was too much a burst exercise, it helped for a bit, then it was just improving my sprint a little bit more. It really is too much a sprint exercise, I need something sustained for at least 20 mins at a go.
Swimming and running both excellent, walking at a quick pace, really pushing it, is also excellent cardio and easier on the joints than jogging.
Another excellent option is jumping rope, if you can get the co-ordination and find or make a rope of the right length. Also excellent for developing calf strength to keep you light on your feet. Thus why boxers do it.
For my part I find it almost impossible, but I'm getting better with practice. Frusterating as all hell really, but totally good exercise.
I've tried power walking, but it always turns into a strole as my mind wanders. I think I'd like it if I could stay focused. Rope jumping I used to love as a kid, that's a damn good idea since it's pretty safe, doesn't take much room and very little equipment. Hrmmmm. How long should I do it for (where "it" is defined as whichever exercise) to get what are my goals from it?
I've found walking fast with a bag full of books to be good, if smelly exercise any thing up to an hour 4-5 times a day. Takes up lots of time though, but some days its so much better than public transport like when they break it for 2 weeks in summer.

Get some good shoes, though, lest your knees strangle you in your sleep.

But for me the bike is still the best way, but it's really important to keeep the intensity up as well as duration.
Running aggravates my knees.
Someone also suggested to me that doing a lot of hiking was very good, but to do it over varied terrain for the best benefit.
