Payments of Respect to the Conclusion of Another's Story banishingsin July 2 2009, 05:17:39 UTC
Auron had met with Rangiku some days before the ceremony was to begin. After exchanging pleasantries and tastes of sake, he thought it best for the memory of the deceased staff, as well as his own credibility among the faculty of Hogwarts, to attend the informal yet respectful memorial service ( ... )

Kristoph was attending to provide staff support for the students and to be sure none attempted to wander off somewhere they weren't supposed to be. Stepping into the area, he glanced around, eyes lighting on a familiar figure he hadn't had the pleasure of speaking too much.

One foot and then the other moved, taking Kristoph over to where Auron stood now. For a few moments, he merely stood with his arms crossed over his chest, surveying the students without speaking to the man close by. He'd stopped well away from his colleague, but close enough that they could still talk if they so desired. After a while, he finally did desire conversation.

"I'm glad someone decided to plan a memorial for the professor," he murmured. "It is only fitting that he be given something like this to see him on his journey."

Auron noticed the light-haired gentleman approaching his side of the gathering, where he had been peacefully resting against a tree alone. He was hoping to keep it that way, but he wouldn't want to be rude against a fellow staff members, especially during such an important event.

Taking note of Kristoph's presence, he gave a slight nod of acknowledgement when the other teacher crossed his arms and waited patiently for the opportunity to speak.

Upon hearing him talk, Auron placed his tinted shades against his face again, hiding his steel eyes behind them. "I didn't know him, but I know it was the right thing to do. Both for him and the ones still here."

Kristoph was a talker by nature, but he also knew when it would be prudent to keep one’s thoughts to oneself. Now was one of those times and so he chose his words carefully when he responded and favored looking out at the crowd of staff and students rather than the man close by.

“I would agree, Professor. This way, they may have the closure they so obviously desire. I only wish I had been able to make a better acquaintanceship with Professor Iroh. He truly was a man to be revered. May his memory serve his legacy in this school and his spirit find the peace it would desire elsewhere.”

Ren had been fiddling around with the instruments that were in Iroh’s possession prior to today but, unfortunately, a week really wasn’t enough time to learn how to play either the koto or the shamisen. Strolling down to the grounds dressed up in a simple button up shirt and black dress pants, Ren looked around at the atmosphere and was quite impressed with the little ceremony of sorts that was taking place.

Sitting next to Rangiku, a lit cigarette held between his fingers, Ren grinned at the lazy professor, “Nice set up you’ve done out here. Iroh would be proud.” His gaze ventured down to the sake bottle that rested on her stomach and pointed at it with a simple question of “you in the mood to share?”

Rangiku opened her eyes at the sound of Ren's voice. "Thank you." With a quiet groan she moved to prop herself up on her elbows, still keeping a hold on the bottle. "Couldn't have done it without a lot of help," she added, looking over at Ren with a smile. "I'm glad you made it."

Eyebrows rising a little, she looked at her bottle. "This ones all mine, but I think there's something equally good over on the table." She smiled apologetically. Yep, this sake was hers, and hell of a lot stronger than what she usually drank. "How are you doing, Ren?"

Lifting the cigarette to his lips, Ren returned the smile and said, "Considering how much work was put into this, it would be rude of me not to come and pay my respects." He may of not known Iroh that well in life but, looking at some of his things, Ren got a good understanding of who he was as a person. He just regretted not learning all this sooner.

Glancing over at the table, Ren sighed, "I'll grab something later." Folding his hands behind his head, he relaxed on the grass, looking up at the stars. "I think I should be the one asking you that, Ran."

"We're just here to do that." Her gaze returned to the sky and the stars, and all manner of wistful thoughts rolled through her mind, stories she'd heard and myths, and part of her wondered if they were true. The other part wondered if she was really that ridiculous-- but there was nothing wrong with optimism, was there? "Maybe have some fun too, if we can manage it."

She sighed lightly at the implied question. Rangiku had heard it a lot recently, asked it a lot as well, but she infinitely preferred the asking to the answering. "I'm all right. Been better, but--" she gestured their surrounds. "This is helping. Feels like doing something, hm?"

Nanao was hovering on the edge of the proceedings, wanting to stay out of the spotlight, but still wishing to be there to pay her respects to Professor Iroh. She'd greatly respected his wisdom and seemingly infinite knowledge of tea; and only wished she'd had more chances to learn from him.

The carefully arranged White Irises, flowers symbolistic of death and wisdom, Rosemary (remeberance), and other flowers and plants associated with death and mourning were one way of showing this, even if all most people saw were beautifully arranged flowers and missed the meaning behind them.

Shunsui was here to say goodbye to the dead. Iroh had been a fine man, a good teacher, and the Hufflepuff ghost was sad to see him gone. The halls of Hogwarts would be very empty without his wisdom to fill them.

Floating around the periphery of the gathering, he spotted Nanao, and debated whether or not he should go to her. She looked... oddly vulnerable. He could not let her be alone.

"Professor Ise," he said, as he came up next to her, inclining his head in solemn greeting. "Your flowers are lovely."

"Thank you." she replied, giving a small nod of thanks. The unnatural 'profesor' made her grit her teeth. When she'd asked him to be less familiar with her, she hadn't expected to find it as... as awkward and uncomfortable as it was turning out to be. With a tiny sigh she tried to put it out of mind. There were other things that needed her attention

"I've always made sure to have suitable flowers on hand for formal school occasions," she said after a slight pause. "But- I hadn't expected them to be put to such a use." she continued, feeling the need to keep the pause from developing into an awkward silence.

It was not often that Shunsui felt a situation called for seriousness. Most of the time, he preferred to add humor and levity, both to keep others' spirits up and to keep his own private thoughts hidden. But tonight was not a night for jokes or teasing, no, no night had been in quite some time. Not since he had realized with mounting horror that he had well and truly hurt Nanao with his behavior during... that spell. She was so quick to believe the worst of him, and really that was his fault, wasn't it? He'd never done anything but antagonize her. How was she to know that he had been so concerned it had frightened him, and that his reaction to that fear was to cover it with lewd humor and pretend that everything was fine? Indeed, that it was his reaction to anything concerning her. The growing depth of his feeling for her worried him. Both for himself, and for her ( ... )

Touya slipped in among the flowers, avoiding all other people, even though he knew that he should probably talk to someone.

He hated his short-term Divination affinity, didn't know what to do with it; but just this once, he wished that his affinity had been long-term, instead, so that he could have somehow -- somehow -- prevented or at least delayed this from happening.

This...

He sat, almost collapsed really, on the ground, and looked up at the stars.
