Meh.. I dunno.

--In keeping with my recent spat of lonely space faring stories, I finally watched Solaris (1972) which was great. Its like Bergman in space (I could just see a studio exec saying that). At times, it was barely science fiction at all. It didnt feel quite as isolated as 2001, which is one of the main things i like about that type of sci fi ( Read more... )

I don't care what anyone says, I still really want to see Skinny Puppy damn it! I will not pay that retarded price though. Maybe ten years ago I would have been OK with it (because I like their stuff from 10 years ago better than anything current) but this is such a let down! Maybe you could hide me in your pocket or something if you end up getting the pass?!

"Nick and I are going to show him the town and go to the Sword show tomorrow night. Metal. About swords and wolves. Righteous." Righteous indeed! I'm jealous.

Oh yes. "may the mountains rise against you, may your axes chip and break. May the winter wolves surround you." Ha. Love it.

I'll keep you posted 'bout the SP situation.

Was Solaris your first Tarkosvky film?

What's up with your Futon?

Are you looking forward to Burphday '08?

How can we top Burphday '07?

You gonna give it your Ben Murphiest?

Yes, I think it was my first. I can't think of any others. I should add a bunch of his to my queue. Futon is cracked and wont fold up to the couch position. Since i do the awesome bachelor pad dual position couch to bed action, its frustrating. I need a new frame.

I think we owe it to Ben give Burphday '08 our Ben Murphiest. Not sure how we will top it... maybe fly him in? That'll be a nicely rounded 5th time.

We could assemble a life-sized Ben Murphy out of blowcombs and Billy Beer.

1. Hey, Jon and Russ and Colin and I have just started having a writing group every other Tuesday night. It's a pretty brutal gauntlet we've sending each other's short scripts and outlines through like rocks through a polishing machine, and it's come up twice now that we'd like to invite Erick and/or you and Erick (whatever consists of the writing team... sounds like both) to join us. Especially if you have something ready to show people and something you're not feeling the heart of yet, that sounds like the goddamn perfectest time to drop in for a bit. Our next meeting is (presumably) the 27th of March, (presumably) at around 8:00pm and running until maybe midnight. You really should mention it to Erick and consider coming, script in hand. Best case scenario, you leave with a better grasp on your story and a better script in your head; worst case scenario, you have a perspective on how four sharp film guys view your script and you disagree with everything they said but in defending it you've sharpened your own views on why the ( ... )

The three of us already act as kind of a writers' group when we're developing something, so its already gone through the Ringer once. Though, thats certainly not to say that it couldnt benefit from more. I'll keep it in mind.

That's cool. I'm of the opinion that a script can never be hammered-away at enough. The day of shooting it probably still needs rewrites. (That's not a comment on any of your ability... that's at least as true of my works as anyone else's. I'm just sayin'.)

No sweat. Offer stands. We'd love to have you guys. Not a lot of likeminded writers in town willing to get their hands dirty (or, rather, there's probably tons and we just don't know them... but we know you guys).

I remember when I read through 2001 and 2010. I had not seen the movies but actually read them both in the 4th grade for a book report. Needless to say existential aliens really messed up my mind at that age. Try giving an oral book report on that crap! I liked Scooby Doo I didn't know what the fuck I just read.

I enjoyed Solaris mostly, but really, did I need to see 10 minutes of that guy driving? If you like people staring off into space for long periods of time, then I highly recommend Stalker. The story shouldn't take that long to tell but good ol' Tarkovsky stretches it out like a champ, a boring boring champ. It's the movie equivalent of talking on the phone to someone that is doing something else.

I am interested in what you think of the remaining books in the 2001 series. I read them all a couple of years ago and some are good, some are less so.

Also I heard a nasty rumor that "Closing Time" may be playing with Kcor. I am unsure if I need to apologize or not.
