The Real Work

It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work,

and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings.

~~Wendell Berry

Our parents left us
blood and words

we leave our children
blood and words

we sing to our bones
beside the fire

we sharpen our fists
into daggers

almost dead
we assassinate

almost nothing
we rip out our eyes

our parents left us
blood and words

we leave our children
blood and words

--Homero Aridjis

From Vivir para ver/Living to see (1977)
