Yesterday and the day before were going to be all about hockey for me. What a surprise! I watched the women's combined with
littleangelmary one day, as well as the women's halfpipe. I got home to watch the 1,000m women's long track speed skating. I watched the Canadian men squeak by the Swiss and cheered the Slovakians against the Russians. I even cheered for the US figure skater!
Psst Aussies! You won GOLD!
I love the Olympics!
So... we weren't expecting much from the women's Canadian alpine skiers this year, but in the case of the Germans, they are always expecting to do well. But Maria Riesch was having a tough time in the shadow of the US' Lindsey Vonn. Well, unfortunately for Vonn, she was leading after the down hill portion, and fell in the slalom. Ugh. But wow - the joy for Germany!
And yay for Anja Paerson from Sweden who also crashed hard in the downhill, but managed a bronze with a gutsy performance after being pretty darn bruised after the crash.
I also watched the women's halfpipe for the first time ever - and was really amazed at how high they fly and the spins they do... wow! And big cheers to my Aussie friends - Torah Bright wins Gold!
Okay, not in order, but another gold for Canada! Hurray and big cheers for Christine Nesbitt from London (my adopted hometown!). Gold medallist in 1,000m long track speed skating!
Can't wait for the parade and the 'Welcome Home - Christine Nesbitt, Gold Medallist!' banner at the airport here in London!
The big treat of the night was supposed to be the Canada vs Switzerland hockey game. A chance for redemption for Team Canada because of the shutout last Olympics in Turin. Instead, it became one serious nailbiter for this smurf. Thanks to
lamaitresse for keeping me company while my stomach became one big ulcer! Canada squeaks it out in a shootout with kudos to Sid the Kid and Marty!
And although I really enjoyed the final result, the best hockey win of the night goes to ... Slovakia! They were in tough against the super!Russian squad and managed an upset win! Chara and Hossa were huge, but Demitra with the goal! Yay for Slovakia! Yawn for the smurf... I was up til two cos I couldn't not watch til the end!
Last but not least, another shout out to our neighbours from the south. I acknowledge that I've always had a hard time cheering for the Yanks cos they usually overshadow us sooooo much. But this guy? Deserved his gold. *raspberry* at those who think quads make the man! Congratulations Evan Lysacek!
Reporter!smurf signing off again - I'm having a great time watching, cheering and sniffling through these Olympics!
