Sporty's Olympic report 4 - Speed Skating and Curling!

Feb 18, 2010 16:45

I seem to be skipping a day in between - this time difference and RL are killing me.

First time round I forgot about our figure skater Patrick Chan and his tough performance in the short program. Cheers Patrick - all the pressure in the world and it wasn't your best performance, but definitely shows you are now and will have a chance to be a world-beater soon.  Good luck in the upcoming long program!
Pluschenko - wow. Not sure what else I can say, but wow!

I'll start with a little cheer for Jeremy Wotherspoon.  A picture perfect ending wasn't to be, but I still believe that Jeremy is one of the greatest skaters at the 500m distance anyway and a great Canadian athlete.  Way to go Jeremy!

Curling started and while it will be a bit before we get to medal rounds, we're off to a great start at 2-0 for the men and 1-0 for the women!

Sorry geeky - I couldn't find a really nice pic of Cheryl Bernard, but rest assured, I'll find one and post one soon!

It was really the day for downhill - big cheers for the Americans (yes I did say that!) Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso! On a day when so many competitors fell, you two just threw everything out there! Injured shin? Pfft.

And saving the best (for Canada) for last... Marianne St.-Gelais wins silver on her 20th birthday!
What a great birthday present!
Cheers for Jessica Gregg (I really did think you got bumped in the final!) and Kalyna Roberge, too!

Final notes on the day:
Sniffles while Maelle received her gold medal for the snowboard cross.
What happened with the Swedish women's hockey team? I know they're way better than they showed.  13-1 Canada. Hmm...
Huge cheers for Slovakia's women's hockey team - yes you got squashed by a tremendous Canadian squad, but you got up and nearly won your next game against the Swiss - well done! I honestly thought you might pull it off after that awesome goal at the beginning of the 3rd period. Good luck going forward!

Reporter!smurf signing off - next up, more hockey, alpine skiing (with special cheers for Germany!) and more curling!
