I've got a new job. A medicated dog who has to have special meals, with messy digestive problems. I just switched thesis topics, and am starting over. I've got an online business. I'm trying to figure out life after graduation. I need to find a new apartment soon. I'm stuck in a meditation class that puts me in extreme physical pain, so that I ( Read more... )

that sounds like a stupid class... you can meditate without having to contort your body or be in a full lotus position. your teacher should understand that and accommodate for you if it is actually painful.

Yeah, it's more me than the class... I have (relatively mild) scoliosis so sitting straight up for the better part of two hours is a bit difficult. I expected it to wear out my back muscles (but that's probably a good thing) but my tailbone is at sort of a weird angle and I think I also bruised some vertebrae that touch (or come way too close to touching) when I'm sitting straight.

I'm going to give it a week or two but if it doesn't get better I'll tell the guy. Could just be a sign of how out of shape I am :-P

yeah... i have (had?) a pronounced form of kyphosis (similar to scoliosis but directionally different), and i started doing a regimen of calisthenics that focused on my core (especially lower back), as well as lazy yoga (my own attempt[s] that usually lasted 25 minutes TOPS each session), and found that to help with my back pain A LOT.

and yeah, keeping your back straight is the hardest part about meditation. but it's more of an obstacle than a permanent problem-- keeping good posture gets easier with time

Yeah I'm hoping that it'll strengthen my crappy back muscles. Yoga was excellent for the back pain but my work schedule conflicts with all the yoga-for-pe-credit classes, so I just have to do it on my own now. Which means, so far, that I don't. But we'll see. Perhaps I'll buy a book.
