Stopped at 50,461 tonight. But I'm trying to figure out how much more story is left, and it looks like about 35-40%. So I should be able to finish in November, probably around 80k or so. Perhaps much more. Time will tell. I kind of need to step back and remember what the story is about ( Read more... )

Yep, Tolkien, Whedon, and Card (and Susanna Clarke, writer of the very gigantic and footnotey Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) are my favourite worldbuilders ever.

Also they all pay very close attention to the two things that I find extremely important that no-one seems to talk about enough in speculative fiction: language and music. Aye aye. (Not music as much with Card -- in fact I can't think of any examples -- but language is all there, yay. SLANG MUST MAKE SENSE, EVEN IN THE FUTURE.)

To my knowledge, he has done two stories specifically about musicians. A novel called Songmaster (not very good) and a short story called Unaccompanied Sonata. But these merely happen to be about musicians, rather than about other things and including music as part of the surrounding culture.

But I can think of little examples where there is poetry and song here and there. There's more in the Alvin series than the Ender series, perhaps because much of the Ender saga takes place in environments and cultures where there is less of a pklace for music, and the Alvin series is much more rooted in a more traditional setting.
