Congratulations on your new position! I've really enjoyed your posts here, even if I haven't commented before now, and I feel these are excellent guidelines to live by. And an awesome macro, to boot. :D

I find the need to discuss certain issues revelant in terms of race, but I have a question. If this relationship was one between a man of color and a woman *not* would it continue to be a forum for discussion? True we see *that* mix more in the media, heck in our real lives, yet it tends to raise less issues than this pairing seems to have ( ... )

Honestly, I can't say. I do think it's rarer in pop culture (movies, books, tv shows) to see a man of color paired with a white woman, than the other way around, but that's just my opinion.

And definitely feel your other paragraphs. :) It can be difficult when your image isn't default, but pride in ourselves should still come from within.

This is a question I'm very interested in because I am actually the child of the the former - that is to say, my mother is Latina and my father is white - and I have always thought that was the pairing that we see more of. Then again, perhaps that is reflective of the particular community I come from (and obviously it is reflective of my individual experience which might be totally unique). I see a lot of Latinas with white men and a lot of my friends who are also biracial have white fathers and Asian mothers, but all of the biracial kids I've known who have one parent who is black and one who is white have a black father and white mother. Does anyone know if there are statistics about this somewhere.

sounds good so far! though, i think this statement in particular, is noteworthy...Call upon your skills of tact.
i've seen more pointless bickering in fandoms because everyone just has to have the last word, regardless of perspective.

love this comm though! keep it up!

I'm glad we are setting up guidelines and thoughts. I don't mind discussions that take things deeper- especially with race. I just think it needs to be done in such a way that everyone can give an opinion respectively.
My main issue with that previous thread about Uhura's hair was that it seemed the OP gave their opinion and any differing opinion after that was deemed as "missing the point" or whatever. Sure there were some that were dismissive, but there were many others that simply disagreed. Not to single out that OP but when you give an opinion such as the one given, on a topic such as race, you have to realize not everyone will agree.
Also, the whole "black women will know where I'm coming from" thing irked me too. When discussing race in a community of people from all colors, walks of life, etc- we shouldn't make assumptions on who will get what or side with who.

Totally agree and thought all your points previously were very valid.
