If this has already been addressed, I do apologize. I've been going back over old posts, but may have missed this. I am not an expert on Trek, so I defer to my more knowledgeable friends here

I don't know how you can ask people to go on 5 year missions without their families. But, this could be wishful thinking. Needless to say, I would love to see S/U married in the next installment. I wonder if they will adress a need to rebuild the Vulcan population. Probably not is my guess.
W. Rider - I wondered about flashbacks myself. But, it could be that the wanted a younger actress for the childbirth scene that didn't make it into the movie.
Sort of unrelated - did anyone else think Sarek was a lot nicer to Spock in this timeline. I can't think of a reason for changes in his character that could have resulted from Nero's appearance. Anyone?

I think that Sarek's change was due to Amanda's death. I agree that he did seem nicer to Spock. Sarek had always stuck me as very inflexible, so I found it a little odd to hear him admit that he loved Amanda. Despite this, it did work for me because it was right after he suddenly lost her and his planet. I think the telepathic whiplash of that many Vulcans dying all at once would bring anyone Vulcan to his/her metaphorical knees.
Yes, I can understand Sarek being affected by Amanda's death and the destruction of Vulcan - I was referring to Sarek's treatment of Spock when he joined the Academy. In the TOS episode Journey to Babel he is downright rude to Spock. In this timeline, he has more of "you have a right to choose your own path" attitude.
I totally agree with this. Sarek does appear to be more accepting of Spock in this universe, even before Amanda's death, which is wonderful if you ask me.
My Trek knowledge is rusty, but as far as I can tell/remember romance and marriage between members of the crew is allowed even if the two people are not the same rank. The only person not allowed is the captain. The episode "Balance of Terror" begins with Kirk officiating at a wedding of two crew members. Later in the episode it clearly states that the groom is the bride's superior officer. There are a number of other episodes that feature crew members dating and it's treated as normal and acceptable.
Civilians were not on starships until the TNG era. Though not explicitly said in the movie, I understand that it was the writers intentions that both of Kirk's parents were Starfleet officers.
I have no idea if they plan to use Winona Ryder again, but I'd love to see more Amanda.
Oh, I'm going to make myself so unpopular here. I think it's perfectly plausible that they get married, given the precedents in several of the series. But I'm really not sure it's what I would want for either party. They both strike me as so career-oriented that they would want to keep their options open. When Uhura kicks off about not being assigned to the Enterprise, it's not because she wants to be with Spock, but because it would be the best thing for her career.
I think if there's a wedding in the pipeline, it'll be a long way off. On-screen marriage is for sappy couples, like Troi and Riker. I see them as a much more interesting grey area. And we all know that a pairing is far less interesting when Actually Sanctioned. I like the danger of stopping the turbo lift for a quick snog. The idea of sharing quarters and playing Happy Families just totally turns me off.

I personally go all melty and wibbly at the thought of Spock and Uhura getting married, but I also doubt that it would actually happen in the movies. These days it often seems like (at least IMO) popular media's prevailing opinion on marriage is that it's a complete drag, totally unsexy, and something to be Avoided At All Costs.
On the other hand, Spock and Uhura's relationship in this film wasn't presented as something sizzling and sexy, so there might be hope yet. The filmmakers can always use Kirk's manwhoring episodes to ramp up the sexy, "let's reel in the 18-24 year old boys" factor.

They don't strike me as the getting hitched type to me either. At least not for a good long while.
