For #2, this is one of my fics: Carnival of Souls. It's a long story, mostly gen (hints of Sam/Jess and Dean hooks up with random-girl at one point). Sam finds something nasty happening near Stanford. At first he tries to call John, but John's working another case so, although Sam's determined never to hunt again he doesn't have much choice.
