Hi! I'm
heidi8, one of the Guest Reccers for March, and my posts are going to focus on Supernatural crossovers. This post will cover crossovers between SPN and a range of other books, shows, films, etc that are not automatically AUs, and my next post will cover crossovers between SPN and things like Star Wars and Firefly that are full-on AUs from the world we see in Supernatural. My third post will cover both AUs and non-AUs, with a specific focus on things that Jared, Jensen and Jeff have been in, ranging from Wishbone and ER through Gilmore Girls and Smallville, and my fourth will focus on crossovers between SPN and the Buffy/Angel-verse. To me, there's no 'verses too far afield that they can't show up in a crossover together, and I've instinctively felt this way even before that day back in 2004 when
musesfool posted
this poll on the concept of crossing things over.
And at this point, in SPN, wormholes are canon. So technically, they can get anywhere, any time, and see anyone. Hurrah!
Now, you might ask, "Why the focus on crossovers,
heidi8?"
Because I found my way into the SPN fandom through a crossover. I've always been a fan of crossovers, so back in early January, 2007, when
crossover_news collected so many crossovers with Supernatural that they had to
create a separate issue for them, I scanned the list and my eye caught on a Dean/Captain Jack Harkness fic,
Stars in the Twinkling Foam, and I clicked on it. (Note: that fic is NC-17.)
I'd heard of SPN, of course - many people on my flist loved it, and I had some idea about the characters and the show, and I knew there was a pretty Impala, but that was about it. Once I read that fic, though?
I went on itunes and downloaded a slew of episodes and found the S1 DVDs on sale for twenty four bucks, and I mainlined the show within about three weeks, reading fanfic all the while.
So technically, my first love in SPN is crossovers, and I wanted to share some of my favorites here. Please note - everything below spoils for S1 of SPN; most of it spoils for all of S2 and I'll note the fics that were posted after 3.08 aired. And of course, there are spoilers for the other 'verses, in varying degrees.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch... by
r_becca is set in the Potterverse, but nobody goes to the UK - instead, there's Dean, there's dragons (so there's Charlie Weasley). Dean is enthralled, amazed and a bit overwhelmed - but by the dragons, or the red-haired British dragon-keeper? (NC-17, posted after 3.08 but no spoilers beyond the start of Season 3).
astolat's
Old Country. It's a post-S2, post-HP-series fic in which the Winchesters discover that Mary was a witch, and there's an old family home that was left to Dean. There's Hogwarts and Harry and wands and goblins and field trips and fantastic Hufflepuffs. (NC-17, Sam/Dean, but I recommend reading it unless it's a significant squick for you because the story is so much broader than any pairing could be.)
Neil Gaiman's worlds almost call out to be crossed over with SPN, and
lyra_wing and
gwendolyngrace have done so marvelously.
Dust in the Wind is
lyra_wing's post-series crossover with American Gods, where the boys meet various gods, and go on from there;
sa_thinks wrote a
companion to that. Both stories are lyrical, gorgeous and magnificently in keeping with the feel of SPN. If the show ever has to end, I hope it ends the way
lyra_wing has written it.
gwendolyngrace's
Harvester of Eyes is set pre-series, and meshes (literally!) the boys into the Dreaming, while John tries to deal with the Corinthian - and it's almost as if it's set to a Blue Oyster Cult song, too.
musesfool That what you fear the most could meet you halfway brings Dean into contact with one of the Endless.
It may have something to do with the emo bangs of the 2006-2007 TV season (or those old clips from Gilmore Girls), but SPN and Heroes find themselves crossed over a lot. Full disclosure: I'm the maintainer for
peter_and_sam, so instead of reccing every fic on that comm, I'll highlight SPN/Heroes crossovers that don't pair Peter Petrelli and Sam Winchester.
Sometimes, Dean is paired with Peter, or with Nathan.
spiritofkt wrote the first section of
Same Ends, Different Means, where Dean takes Peter home from a Mississippi bar; while the story was never finished, this section works as a searing standalone with a twist ending;
kellifer_fic also traces a moment between
Peter and Dean that's full of foreshadowing, premonitions, longing and loss.
Replacement is about a furtive night in the bathroom of a random New York bar; there's Wincest and Petrellicest allusions but nothing overt - but the story does begin with the line, "Little brothers are a pain in the ass..."
iluvroadrunner6's
What Lies Beneath focuses on Bela as she is asked to find a ten million dollar man, and
crazywritinfool's
Blood Dreams finds Sylar in search of new powers - but he's going after the wrong target.
Thanks to the Doctor's TARDIS and/or Jack Harkness's wristcom, the Doctor Who/Torchwood-verse is probably the most crossed-over with SPN of any non-Earth-based sf/fantasy series. You can find
Jack meeting Sam at Stanford, courtesy of eboniorchid's The First Thanksgiving (PG at the start, NC-17 at the end), or a series of encounters between Winchesters and the Doctor (or DW villains, including an amazing bit involving the Toclafane and the Year that Never Was) in Hearts, Ghosts and Jelly Babies by
longhairedlady.
Sometimes, the TARDIS comes to the states, as in
More Things In Heaven And Earth by
silverweave, set just after DW's The Christmas Invasion; Sam is A-positive.

Gonna Teach You Tricks That'll Blow Your Mind is a Torchwood crossover, with Sam/Ianto; Sam ends up in Cardiff, and the ghosts of Torchwood have to be dealt with.
Propositioned (posted after 3.12) by
saone77 has Jack proposition Dean and Sam - not just in the potentially-salacious way, but, more practically, for Torchwood recruitment.
I'll bet that this summer, we'll see an onslaught of Indiana Jones/SPN crossovers, but it only took a few seconds of a trailer to get
deirdre_c to write
It's Not the Years, It's the Mileage - at Stanford, Sam gets extra credit for attending weekly departmental lectures at the Archeology Center. Posted after 3.11, but no real spoilers for anything beyond the Pilot.
A Die-Hard crossover from
kellifer-fic Normal, a Sam-centric fic where he wants to be normal, just like another guy in his study-group - Peter Parker (Spiderman crossover, preseries)
An Oceans 11 crossover by
lyra_wing where Dean and Rusty meet at a buffet. There's food. And that's enough for them!
One more fic for this round - I couldn't end the post without mentioning
the one where the Impala is an auto-bot, could I? It's called "Don't Touch That Dial", and it's an SPN/Transformers xover, of course!
If you want to jump ahead and read more crossovers, check out
