Sick of them repeating Dean's stories for Sam anonymous April 5 2013, 22:50:48 UTC
I mean they basically copied the same scenes from Purgatory. That was Dean's entire arc of the season done in one ep for Sam. Do you think they did it to mock those complaining about Dean not having storylines or is it them liking their parallels? On top of that Sam's got to do the trials to close Hell solo while Dean cooks food? Seriously? and then there's speculation of Amelia coming back and having an epic back story. How many storylines do they want Sam to carry in one season and yet they give Dean nothing of relevance to the main story. He gets to do more in the odd filler episode but that's nothing compared to being important to the main mythology. Everyone else has got a role except Dean. I never thought Carver would be comparable to Gamble when it comes to sidelining Dean wtf is it with them.

Nonnie, they made a mockery of *everyone's* past storylines by making Hell and Purgatory that easy to get into and out of.

The second half of the season really has been like an DeanGirl nightmare, hasn't it? Dean's badass 'transformation' and character growth in purgatory vanished within 3 episodes, and the only lasting consequence from that SL (Benny) was killed off to save Sam. Not only that, but Sam has acted exactly as a SamHater would expect, not giving a shit when Dean vanished, treating him poorly, etc. Then you've got the fact that just like Hell, Sam 'stole' that specialness by going to Purgatory after him. Add in Dean's non-usefulness in the mytharc once again and the fact that he almost literally said 'I'm gonna hold your cape, Sam' and JA confirmed that Dean's role for the second half of the season is actually "Worrying about Sam", and you've got a perfect storm of shittiness for a very large portion of the fanbase.

This about-face as far Dean's role in the show after the hiatus convinced me that Singer has once again taken over running the show.

And here Dean copies Sam's storyline since the first half was a SamGirl's nightmare...

I started to write a big ole long meta on this detailing season by season but got too sad so in summary:I don't think that they (show-runners, writers directors) have ever got past the original premise of the show which was going to focus on Sam - a nearly normal, innocent college kid - who finally escaped the clutches of his crazy, revenge-driven father and brother just to get dragged back into the life dragging his feet the whole way. Dean's character was secondary and there to facilitate Sam's character development as he takes up the hunter's creed, dabbles with psychic powers, nearly dons the boy-king mantle, but eventually finds his way back to the side of good ( ... )

Agree 100%, and I'm pretty sure it's Singer calling the shots now, since he's the only one who still refers to the characters like that ("Sam is the sensitive one, Dean is the antisocial one, etc'). I feel like a few of the writers understood that the guys have moved far past those original, basic characterizations, but I also think Singer probably overrules them in favor of his shallow, black and white bullshit (my theory as to why Edlund only wrote 2 eps this season. Edlund always liked to go more in depth with Dean, which probably confuses Singer because he doesn't think Dean has any depths).

Frustratingly, every time it looks like they're going to give Dean an important part in the overall mythology, it's yanked from under him.

It's very weird to me that this keeps happening, and for some reason, I keep falling for it. Even now, I tell myself that surely, S9 will be about the Heaven Tablet and Dean will get those ( ... )

Um, what? That's wildly inaccurate even at the most factual level. Sam didn't develop his psychic skills in s3; they were gone. Dean didn't angst in the background in s3; he was right there, front and center. And if you are talking about s4 in your s3 section, REALLY, nonnie? Are you honestly trying to say that Sam's story in s4 took up the foreground?

The fact that Deangirls get 95% of this fucking show and can't stop screaming and crying that they should have Sam's 5%, too, is ridiculous. Counting something like Swap Meat as a huge dropped plot point for Dean when there have been about a thousand such for each character?

We have just had ONE Sam episode in this season. ONE. It was awful. Unlike most of the major Dean eps of the show, it had a pretty major role for the other brother. And now the Deangirls are so fucking jealous of it that they've ramped their martyr act up to 11.

It is funny, yet toxic.

Not much BETTER for Sam? If Dean ever, ever got half the shafting that Sam has gotten this season, you would be able to see the EDG meltdown from space.

Please, don't bite me. I typed a long-ass comment and you pick on a tiny phrase. I think this season was really bad ffor Sam, but I'm not enjoying this version of Dean either, so I don't know who got the shorter straw, tbh. Maybe there's no longer straw in s8.

Cas and Kevin got the long straws. Of course, they aren't leads and don't have the screentime and the range of leads, but both of them have both solid, plotty stuff and character development stuff, and a reasonable variety of interactions with other characters. Why the show can't do this for its main characters is a genuine mystery. People wouldn't need to fight over who comes out worse in the plot Sam/everything else Dean balance if Spn did what normal shows do and gave each character an arc with plot elements and emotional elements.

I've been rewatching DS9, and I swear, juggling a fairly large ensemble cast they still give pretty much everyone more than Spn is managing to give the two friggin' characters who are onscreen for massive parts of every single episode. In a weird way it takes genius to achieve what they do.

I agree, they've managed to pack a lot of meaty stuff into a short amount of screen time. Hell, even Benny had more interesting stuff in his few episodes. I still think it's because Carver et al (Edlund, Glass) seem to be more interested in the supernatural beings (even Kevin is not a normal human) than the regular people. The regular people this season have gotten the shaft or mediocre, surface-deep episodes (or they are just not there, like Jody)
