I don't think I would've read it if it was Dean/OC, so I'm a little torn about that. It's just, this is a writer with talent, so I'm wondering if keeping Cas somewhat recognisable is harder than it looks.

I haven't read this particular fic, but after being critical of head-pastede-on Castiel in human AUs for ages, I've written of one, and found it DAMNED difficult to keep him recognizable. He operates within such a narrow scope on the show that I found it challenging both to extrapolate that out into a character who has to care about things like rent, and to then make those extrapolations feel relevant to the core Castiel stuff.

Anyway, in AU fics, extrapolating new things - yes, difficult - but I'dve thought it would easier to spot things that shouldn't be there, such as Castiel swearing and taking the Lord's name in vain casually (which is among the things that happens in Point Pleasant to through me out).

Finally finished! I have no regrets, though some things that made me cranky:
- This characterization if fic would've been tremendously improved if Castiel took Raziel's role (the original angel character, who stands out all the more because they're the only original character in a huge ensemble FPF cast) and another character took Castiel's. Perhaps Victor, who is similarly an authority figure with the issues that come along with it, though that would've required some tweaking on some of the more emotional parts.
- Rufus as the Mayor pissed me off. I couldn't see any good reason why he had to be the Bible-thumping conspiracy-keeping skeptic bureaucrat, when it could've been, say, Zachariah.
- After the main plot is resolved with the Mothman, I was mentally winding down, only to find, holy shit, there's a whole fucking chapter to go. The story completely lost my interest at that point, I was just no longer invested.

Oh yeah, I skimmed through all the sex scenes after the first one. I usually read them because of the build-up, and there's sometimes emotional things or introspection going on in between, but the ones in this were pretty much focused on the Tab A into Slot B -- which is fine, but with a fic this long and a plot that's happening I want to find out what happens.
Maybe it's a serialized fic? That would explain the wonky pacing.

I didn't understand why they had to mangle Rufus' character either. There is no shortage of self-righteous characters on SPN to chose from. Zachariah would have been perfect. Or maybe Raphael.

I read this a couple of days ago, but didn't go around to posting my reactions until I saw this one, because it's so close to my own. :)
YES on Castiel vs. Raziel. The minute we learned the Mothman was a fallen angel, I started picturing how much I'd love the story with Castiel as the ancient, trapped being that scared the piss out of Dean and Sam as kids but was only ever trying to help. It still could've been a romance!
Also, once again, I encounter "two people are incapable of moving on." Dean's honesty and Castiel's rejection could have been emotionally devastating, to the point where it had a major effect on the people they became, without it being the sort of thing where they couldn't love anyone else ever (their past relationships could have failed for reasons other than I'm in love with my childhood BFF whom I haven't seen in years). I would've liked it better if it was the kind of thing where they'd at least thought that they'd moved on, but then they're faced with the other person and all the old hurt and guilt and ( ... )

WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT. NOW I WANT THIS FIC DESPERATELY.

Are you the nonnie that mentioned this on meme before? Because when I encountered that in the fic I laughed and thought of you. I personally didn't find it as much a problem because I was more caught on how non-Castiel Castiel was.
I didn't mention it above, but I was annoyed with John's characterization as well. He had his soft parts, but his stubbornness leaned towards being too mean for me. (I do not like asshole John.) With that and Castiel's personalities shadowing the fic, I threw up my hands at Sam's lack of emotional connection to Dean because of course they're not close in this fic, naturally yes that is how the author deliberately isolates Dean with his emo. (For the record I enjoyed how Dean manifested and responded to that isolation.)
I missed most of the last chapter because I was just dragging the scroll bar down going WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE'S 28 FUCKING THOUSAND WORDS TO GO THE PLOTTY BITS ARE OVER ( ... )
