S4!Sam taking care of De-aged!Dean which is a trope that's been done before but oh man, this one hit me like a punch to the gut. Wee!Dean's nightmare aaagh and Sam being pure Sam. One of the best deaged stories I've read in ages, even if the author did use the "Sam and Dean's room at Bobby's" fanon that I usually find irritating. So good.

I KNOW OMG. I've read a lot of de-aged!Dean fic before so I'm kinda blase about a number of the tropes that tend to come up in those stories, but this one damn fic. My skin was crawling. Seriously, I've never read a better depiction of the horror of Dean's time in Hell in any story. SO GOOD. Oh, Sam. Oh, Dean.

THERE BETTER BE A PART TWO ENTIRELY MADE UP OF CUDDLES

god, that was horrifying. I think even more because it was coming out of a child's mouth with a child's vocabulary ;-;

Okay, I'm feeling out this theory, and I can't decide if the theory is insightful or just gross, but it seems to me that that level of understanding we see from deaged!Dean in the fic is almost the level at which Dean (or anyone?) would have to understand that kind of trauma. I mean, it's not like adult!Dean, being an adult, can add much additional perspective to what happened to him in hell. Hell (pre-Crowley, anyway) is fractal: it's the same sadistic evil, no matter how you try to cope with it or at what age.

Relatedly, it seems to me that it would have really helped Dean to be able to articulate in canon the experiences deaged!Dean articulates here: they hurt him and made him forget even who he was. Dean's worst post-hell misery seems to be based in what he did to others, without ever acknowledging what was done to him. Based on second-hand things I've read (but zero personal experience), I think this is maybe not an uncommon response to trauma of this kind? To victim-blame oneself? And deaged!Dean here knows that he was 'bad ( ... )

Please feel free to expound on your theory at length.

Actually, I think you did that for me! And in a much more articulate fashion! :D

Your entire first paragraph, in particular, is exactly what I was trying to say. Dean's canonical hell experiences were beyond mortal comprehension. Yes. And deaged!Dean lacks all those adult constraints on expressing his feelings and experiences, and so he's able to be honest about them, to himself and to Sam, in a way that adult!Dean isn't.

And yes, it absolutely makes sense for Dean in particular to blame himself for what happened in hell. As you say, his self-loathing is reiterated over and over in canon. (Actually, I think canon has about five times as much evidence of that particular facet of his character as I think is really necessary; I occasionally feel as though canon thinks I'm stupid and have forgotten in between mentions. But that's a different discussion.)

IMO, Dean focuses so heavily on the time he spent torturing in part because it was the only time in Hell that he had any ( ... )

ALL THE CUDDLES AND QUITE POSSIBLY HOT COCOA AS WELL.

And yeah, I think it's that it's a child experiencing all of this, a child's bewilderment and terror being expressed. It's just so devastatingly raw.

My Sunday evening went like this ...

Sees this summary: On a witch hunt gone wrong, Dean is cursed. He's been turned into something... different and possibly adorable and the group has to figure out a way to turn him back before it gets too late. But he's starting to like being different, especially around his favorite angel.

Says to self: Dean's a cat, isn't he?

Thinks to self: But what if he isn't? What if he is an entirely fictional tiny furry monster with fangs who chomps the furniture whenever he's not demanding cuddles?

Checks.

Sees that Dean is a cat.

Feels woe.

I haven't read the fic yet, because I am still with the woe. Tell me that Dean is a cat in the summary! Don't let my own brain hurt me with its whimsical imaginings!

He could've been a Mogwai! Or a tribble! Or those little furry things from The Dark Crystal!

Tribble-Dean! However would they keep him away from food?

And Castiel would enjoy being in a big pile of purring tribbles. There's no doubt in my mind.

But seriously "different ... and possibly adorable" suggests so many fun possibilities. And you learn that's he a cat a couple sentences in. There was no need to hide him becoming a cat in the summary, except to sadden me.

Also, since when are cats possibly adorable?

And if Dean's a tribble, that means he's almost perpetually pregnant, of which I approve.
