Nothing a character SAYS is sacrosanct as canon in SPN. They do a wonderful job of allowing all the characters their own individual interpretations of events and varying level of knowledge about things; so when someone says something, it requires a great deal of considering why and in what context it is being said, and who it is being said to.
Word word wordity word WORD. That's so exactly my approach to SPN. Unreliable narrators. Characters who lie, character who say untrue things thinking they're telling the truth, who speak from hurt or a very subjective emotional POV, or who think they know what went down but they don't, or are trying to comfort someone else or reassure themselves so they say what they think needs to be said.
Hee! You and I think so much alike it is a little scary sometime, eh?
it is ;) and isn't it however so very fascinating how differently we write, in a way? It is for me, anyway :D
it falls back to a consistent theme of the show: Demons lie, they also tell the truth. Nothing is what it seems, but sometimes it is. Just because you read it on a website, doesn't mean it isn't crap ... though often it is.
Agreed, fully. Just think about Gordon (and I have suddenly remembered why he struck a weird note with me: his story is basically Gunn's story in Angel, sister and all, only Gunn was hoping to save his sister and she revealed herself has having been turned attacking him), and his own truth.
Here's what i was thinking. Ellen is still pissed about John and what she thinks/imagines he did *or what he said he did*. BUT. She really does seem to like the boys, and in the last moment there, she was all 'oh, i'm sorry, no-' Trying very hard to not actually *say* what she eventually said. You know? Like she was trying not to poison Jo's memories of her dad *or* her new friendship with the boys. I think Ellen just lost it for a while, totally freaked over Jo being gone, but i also think that she'll eventually either apologize or explain, and not hold anything against the boys. Jo, on the other hand...
I think John and Jo's dad went on a hunt, it went pear-shaped and John was guilt-ridden. He told Ellen either the bare details or he took all the blame, and then never came back. I think she finally made her peace with it - her voice mail message wasn't all pissed off or anything - and she was just overreacting.
Good meta! :)
She's young, and volatile. She might, for a while.
As far as I know, he was referring to the (then WB) CW spn forum boards - it was in an interview footage, and they had a laptop or pc screen switched on and you could see those were the WB boards.
It's been suggested they may also have a look at the TWoP boards (addy in papawinchester for both, I can't yet get to LJ or I'll give you the link, sorry), but I'm pretty sure in that interview they were referring to the (then WB) CW forums.
Yes, Ellen lost it there for a while, which is totally understandable, and let it slip. *pets her* thank you for commenting, and forgive me for rushing! :D
Ah. Huh. I never go in those places - too many crazies! And the person doing recaps of SPN *and some other shows i liked* seemed to *hate* them, so... Not fun to read when everything that happens is 'lame' or whatever.
I only dabble with the CW forums, but the TWoP have fame of being nasty for the sake of it...which can be fun, I admit it, but I prefer a more friendly and positive environment :D
Her father's death isn't at all banal as a motivation for Jo to choose hunting as a career, we've seen that practically every hunter is into it because they have lost someone dear to them, so why should it be different for her? Also, this show runs on archetypes. It's a basic heroic trope, getting into the game because of a tragic loss--to spare others the same kind of losses. It's not that SPN is always predictable, but it often is, in the "inevitability" sense. It looks at familiar situations and character types through a new and unique set of goggles
( ... )
LOL well, yes, I know, too much of a soap, too little of SPN. *g*
And yes, with you on the archetypes, and what tragic losses can turn into in this particular universe.
I think a lot of the Jo-dislike came with the early versions of her blog and her being presented as The Love Interest. Without both, most fans wouldn't have had their hackles raised even before seeing her.
*nodnod* Also, if they truly read the boards, they've read that Jo as Love Interest might be a big no-no with a vocal part of the fandom...so they may be re-adjusting their aim in another direction.
Besides, for me? ANYTHING, including a 'it was a ll a dream' plot hole in order to have some John in future episodes *G*
I'm going to be doing a meta about Ellen, mother lion to the nth degree--, and I was wondering if I can mention some of what you said in the meta? Since it matches some of the reasons I think that she is acting like a mother lion to Jo.
If so I will tell where it came from?
Thanks, Sarah Who is doing this for the very first time and hope it comes out as good as yours!
I'm sure it will, after all, the best part about a meta is getting to know about someone else's point of a view of a certain character or situation or storyline, the circualtion of ideas about this show we like so much, you know?

Plus like you said, they set her up as a sister in this episode and there is alot that we don't know about John when he wasn't with Sam and Dean.
