Her father's death isn't at all banal as a motivation for Jo to choose hunting as a career, we've seen that practically every hunter is into it because they have lost someone dear to them, so why should it be different for her?
Also, this show runs on archetypes. It's a basic heroic trope, getting into the game because of a tragic loss--to spare others the same kind of losses. It's not that SPN is always predictable, but it often is, in the "inevitability" sense. It looks at familiar situations and character types through a new and unique set of goggles.
It seems like the brattyness and annoying traits are on purpose--which makes it character flaw, not poor writing or acting. At least in my book. And I really was impressed with Alona Tal's performance--the moment when she sits as bait especially, you can see how scared she is and she's keeping herself from running too soon.
I'm with you on a, b, and c. It's not even a question of lying--not consciously. It's about POV.
LOL well, yes, I know, too much of a soap, too little of SPN. *g*
And yes, with you on the archetypes, and what tragic losses can turn into in this particular universe.
I think a lot of the Jo-dislike came with the early versions of her blog and her being presented as The Love Interest. Without both, most fans wouldn't have had their hackles raised even before seeing her.
