A Hell of a Meta:
Hi, I’ll be your arch nemesis today.
In the wake of the first episode of Season Two there was been some incredible research and deduction done, that goes to prove that when the apocalypse is approaching, LJ will be the place for your demonic news updates. Government black-ops think tanks? Piss off - this is where the talent is.
So maybe as the Season progresses, we can update and link here entries that provide us with meta on the character without whom we’d have no show - just a couple of pretty boys and their sexy father driving around the country in a hot car (not that there’d be anything wrong with that…). Please feel free to let me know what I got wrong here, or add links to other posts or more info.
Canon
What we know for sure about The Demon:
- Is male - based on Meg's reference to it as "Father" in Scarecrow.
- Has plans for certain children who have some psychic abilities (Sam=visions of death; Max=telekinesis; Anson and Andy=mind control)
- Until Season Two it appeared that it killed their mother on the night when the child is exactly 6 months old
- Also killed Sam’s girlfriend because “she got in the way”
- also happened on Sammy's six-month birthday - 22 years later, but the same night of the year.
- The whole mother killing/six month birthday significance was blown out of the water in Simon Says. Neither Anson's birth or adoptive mother died at this time or in this way.
- Prior to the attacks, there are cattle mutilations and weird weather in the area . When it is nearby, the Demon causes fluctuations in the power supply. Also stops clocks, although it is not indicated whether time itself is affected.
- John thinks it has been dormant for 22 years
- It is not affected by Holy Water. The Winchesters believe is can't cross salt lines but we have no evidence that this is so.
- It has some vulnerability to the Colt. John believes it can be killed by the Colt.
- When the Demon possesses someone their eyes appear golden.
- The Demon can appear in dreams
- Can appear in human form other than when possessing someone (Figure that appears over the baby's crib in "Woman in White" and "Salvation").
- Can be summoned, as John does so in 2.01 In my time of dying. Details of the ritual used for this are described in the metas below
- Cannot stop someone dying but “knows someone who can” . Appeared to be able to force a reaper to not claim Dean's life.
- Possibly responsible for, or at elast connected with, the virus in Croatoan which caused people to become murderous. Appeared to be testing whether Sam was immune to the virus (which he was)
- The Demon refers to “its children” who can possess humans.
- When the Demon’s children possess a human, their eyes appear black, although not all the time (eg Meg, Duane)
- They can enter a church, but not cross salt lines.
- They are repelled and hurt to some extent by holy water
- Possession is ended by exorcism
- Communicate with the Demon through collecting human blood in a goblet (that conveniently fits in a back pack)
hooloovoo_too has possibly made a deal with the devil because she constructed a classification of all the demons in Supernatural verse (up to 2x08) in
The Winchester Guide to Demonology TheoriesTheories early in Season Two agreed that the Demon was likely to be Azazel a demon with a grudge against the powers of good, who has children by human women and that these children have special abilities. There was a lot of speculation about whether Sam was actually demon offspring.
Clear? you can go then.

and this probably was exactly what they did from the beginning,
while ruling over us as gods and halfgods.
It does make you wonder though,
