They were both shouting, trying to scream each other down. Their voices hurt Dean’s ears and he winced as Sam threw another accusation at their dad. He wished they would both calm down, talk it out rationally. Shouting was not going to convince Sam to stay. And then Dad did it, the absolute worst thing he could ever do, the one thing that was gauranteed to drive Sam away forever; he gave him an ultimatum.
Silence fell like a heavy stone. Dean didn’t dare breathe, forcing himself to look at his brother and feeling his heart crumble at the pained shock in Sam’s eyes, edged with bitter determination. He didn’t say a word, just stared at his father, but Dean could read the answer in his expression. Silently, Sam turned and grabbed his single bag of belongings. He hesitated a moment in the doorway before walking out into the night and Dean followed quickly.
“You can’t do this,” he demanded to Sam’s back, his voice cracking ever so slightly, and his brother tensed a little.
“He’s the one that pushed it. I’m sorry, I just can’t live like this. I’m… I’m sorry.”
“Sam-”
“Goodbye, Dean.”
Dean shook his head slowly, staring in disbelief as Sam started to talk away. He tried to say something, anything, but the words wouldn’t come. All he could do was watch, in tortured silence, as his brother walked out of his life.
