Summary: John calls Sam and Dean, telling them he is hunting the thing that killed their mother and finally reveals that it is a demon. However, instead of letting them help him, he tells them to investigate the disappearances of young couples in rural Burkitsville, Indiana, Sam reveals to Dean that he would rather track down their father, prompting the two to angrily separate. As Sam meets a fellow hitchhiker named Meg Masters, Dean starts the investigation and saves a traveling couple from a living scarecrow. Dean calls Sam about the creature, and discovers that a Vanir is being summoned in the form of a scarecrow to protect the town in exchange for annual sacrifices, with a sacred tree in the town giving it power. Because the couple intended for the ritual escaped, the townspeople choose Dean and Emily -a girl who lives in town with her aunt and uncle- to be the new sacrifices. However, Sam returns and rescues them just in time, and the scarecrow instead takes Emily's aunt and uncle as its victims. The next morning, Emily and the brothers burn the sacred tree, and then leave town. Meanwhile, Meg hitches a ride on the highway, but slits the driver's throat, collecting his blood into a goblet and using it to communicate with an unknown being whom she calls father.

Wake up call from dad has Sam angry and the boys on a new hunt
The boys argue during research and Sam takes off into the night
Dean arrives in town and starts his work deciding not to call Sam or dad
Sam meets another hitchhiker Meg who leaves him behind
Dean interviews the town people and gets directed to the orchard where the EMF meter goes off
Dean investigates the orchard and finds the scarecrow (fugy) and notices a tattoo from the victim
Dean returns to town charming Emily and finding out there is a new couple in town
Sam missed the bus and has to wait but he runs into Meg again after not calling Dean
Dean finds the next victims and tries to warn them but gets run out of town
The next victims have a run in with the scarecrow and are saved by Dean
Sam calls Dean while he waits with Meg and Dean tells Sam to do what he has to and that he is proud of Sam
Dean gets some help in finding out what he is hunting
Dean gets knocked out and locked up along with Emily to become the next victims as agreed by the town people
Sam is worried and decides to return to Dean when he can't reach him leaving Meg behind
Dean tells Emily what will happen to them and about the scarecrow before they are tied up and left in the orchard
sam arrives (after stealing a car) to rescue Dean and Emily but the scarecrow is on the loose
Trying to run away they are surrounded by towns people
Some of the towns people become the new victims of the scarecrow allowing Sam, Dean and Emily to escape
