I would suppose the minimum requirement involves that people can't identify you. It is a masquerade after all. A mask and preferably not the uniform.

He is a dog...Hayate. [there is a particular tone to her voice that causes him to act quickly, dropping his silly dog behavior and sliding into something a little more polished. He immediately sits at her side, still.] He won't hurt you.
