Spirit Beasts and You!

In Yu Yu Hakusho, Yusuke is given an egg by Koenma, and told to keep it on his person at all times, because it will hatch into his spirit beast.

Now, what is a spirit beast you might ask?

Well, in Yu Yu Hakusho canon, a spirit beast is a reflection of a person’s inner self. If you are kind and good, your spirit beast will take on a shape that reflects that. And if you are a terrible, cruel person, your spirit beast’s appearance will reflect that. And, coincidentally, if you are a terrible, cruel person, your spirit beast will eat you after it hatches. Yusuke's egg hatched into Puu, who eventually transformed into this.

As for what Puu actually is to Yusuke, it’s best to quote Koenma. “The package with your spirit beast is full package deal. It’s like your reflection. When you’re happy, it will be happy. When you’re in pain, it will suffer. And if you die, so will it. It is you.” Puu and Yusuke are linked intricately, in that Puu is really and truly Yusuke’s other half.

What is Puu’s function, you might ask? In canon, Puu basically functioned as Lassie the sheep dog. When Yusuke fell down a well (got himself into serious trouble), Puu would go for help. When Puu transformed into a huge, kickass phoenix (this is something I could TL;DR on forever and ever, but I’ll refrain from it, because it’s not relevant to anything at the moment) Yusuke would ride Puu from place to place.
