"Excuse me?" His question was flat, emotionless. He wasn't going to let his brother get to him so early on in the meeting. Just because Dante had lost his temper didn't mean he had to lose his. The longer he kept calm, the better off he would be in the end.

Even though Dante's hypothesis was absolute in his own mind, that didn't prevent him from realizing that the entire scenario didn't make any sense. At all. What use would Vergil have for Matt Engarde? Terrorizing people held no appeal to the older twin--people were useful for what they could offer in service, or they were disposed with a quick motion of Yamato.
What sort of service could Vergil be receiving from someone whose crowning achievement was the tortured figure of young blonde hanging from the Church gates?
Unless...
"You said you wouldn't join the Church, Vergil." The accusation was delivered with low, deliberated rage. Somehow, the idea of Vergil having joined the Church bothered him on a level too deep to understand. Betrayal was the only word that came to mind, but that didn't make any sense.
Honestly, what bond to Dante did Vergil have that hadn't already been severed?

He couldn't believe the audacity of his little brother. It would be a very, very cold day in hell before Vergil sacrificed himself over to another maniacal group again. He'd had his fill of crazed dictators for his life. There was nothing the Church could offer him that would make him change his mind; it was his life and it was about time that he started running it.

It was an honest enough question.

Dante growled under his breath at the voice and at Vergil both. "Matt Engarde is a monster, Vergil. Wanting him dead does not make me you."
Now if only he could believe that much himself.

"I said the same of many that I killed. Doesn't make it true though. You'd be better passing the task off to someone else. That's not something you want riding on your conscious."

Was this the same Vergil?
"You know," Dante started, voice serious in tone and low in volume, "I would have guessed that you'd have given me a lecture on releasing my true nature and sent me back to finish the job."

"You still have a conscious and, therefore, being more demonic won't do you any good. You're still too human to get away without serious repercussions. Maybe if you dispose of the annoying voice, I might stand a chance of convincing you to give in to your inner demon, but I know you won't, so it isn't worth wasting my breath on you."
