Even your brother knows it.

Dante growled under his breath at the voice and at Vergil both. "Matt Engarde is a monster, Vergil. Wanting him dead does not make me you."

Now if only he could believe that much himself.

Vergil settled his weight on the table behind him. He would have to approach this carefully, lest he wanted another fight to break out.

"I said the same of many that I killed. Doesn't make it true though. You'd be better passing the task off to someone else. That's not something you want riding on your conscious."

Dante stared at his brother for several long moments. Did Vergil just... suggest he not kill Matt Engarde?

Was this the same Vergil?

"You know," Dante started, voice serious in tone and low in volume, "I would have guessed that you'd have given me a lecture on releasing my true nature and sent me back to finish the job."

Once again, the door had been opened. This time Vergil wasn't going to let it pass.

"You still have a conscious and, therefore, being more demonic won't do you any good. You're still too human to get away without serious repercussions. Maybe if you dispose of the annoying voice, I might stand a chance of convincing you to give in to your inner demon, but I know you won't, so it isn't worth wasting my breath on you."

Despite the fact that his insides were churning, Dante had returned to his usual aloof state over the course of the conversation. Casually, he reached down and pulled the table off the floor.

"Glad to hear that we both agree about you not wasting your breath." Honest enough statement, all things considered.

And with that, Dante made his way to Vergil's door. He opened it--it led to the street outside. "Nice chatting with you, Verge. We should do this more." A sardonic half-salute, and Dante exited the building and closed the door behind him.

Three steps out, and he dropped the light demeanor and fell into a brood. He needed time to think.

There was a lot to think about.

Vergil watched his brother go, hoping he'd be smart enough to listen. But for now, he had bigger things to mull over. 'A lunatic on the loose. Now that is a challenge that sounds interesting.'
