Unfortunately, the redhead couldn't help but wince when Guy grasped his arm. Some part of him was still just a bit afraid of the other, and the other fact was that his arm hurt. His skin itched and burned, it was irritating beyond imagination.

But at Guy's words, Luke glanced up at him and looked him properly in the eyes. There was no malice, no intent to kill. These were the eyes of the person who had raised him, of the man who had waited for him at Aramis Springs and welcomed him back, accepting him even after Akzeriuth. Without a second thought to his pain or illness, he threw his arms around Guy and hugged him tight.

"Guy. It's you. It's really you." His voice broke as he pressed his face against the other's chest.

Guy's eyes widened, surprised. Luke was hugging him?! After all that had happened, this was his response...?

The relief threatened to overwhelm him again, and before he knew it he had reached up to very lightly hug Luke back, closing his eyes. "Yeah... Luke, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I attacked you like that... I never wanted to hurt you."

Luke sounded practically heartbroken. He really hadn't known that this could happen - he'd really thought that Guy was dead.

Luke... I put you through more pain without even knowing it...

Somehow, I'll make it up to you.

"I know. I know you didn't want to," Luke whispered, hands clinging at Guy's clothes. He was warm, and Luke could hear his heart beating. He was really here, really alive. The overwhelming relief to see his friend here again was almost crushing Luke. He bit down onto his lip before continueing. "I... I should be the one apologizing. I'm sorry... I wasn't strong enough and you paid for that. I never meant for things to go the way they did."

He looked up, salty lines streaked down his cheeks as his reddened green eyes sought the comforting cerelean he had known since he was born. "I said... horrible things. And I was an idiot. I'm so sorry..."

Typical Luke, taking the blame for what had happened on his own shoulders. He'd changed so much since Akzeriuth - too much, perhaps, for his own good. Guy knew the importance of taking responsibility for one's own actions, which was why he couldn't let Luke take the fall for this one.

"You don't have to apologize, Luke," he shook his head, smiling patiently. He lifted a hand to Luke's cheek, lightly brushing away the tears. "I'm the one who attacked you, and caused my own death." How strange it was to say that. "And no matter what you said, I know you didn't mean it. You were just trying to get my attention, to help your father." He lowered his gaze briefly. "I can't deny that there was some truth to what you said, either."

Yes, the words they had exchanged had been terrible... but Luke had made several good points that Guy hadn't been able to acknowledge until that moment.

"I tried... I just wanted to get you back. I know I screwed up, and I caused you and Asch a lot of pain..." Luke wanted to continue, explain how things had gone at the bar and hope that Guy would understand all that had happened. But he suddenly choked, head bending as he coughed violently into his hand.

His hand slipped from Guy's shirt and he fell down, steadying himself with his free hand. After a few seconds Luke finally caught his breath. He wiped his lips, feeling completely embarrassed that this was the shape Guy had to find him in.
