Yesterday I adulted

TBG and I went into The Neptune Society and got everything arranged for 'our last big trip,' if you know what I mean. We'd had our will and trust done for years and kept putting this off. Now, it feels good to know that we have taken one more burden off our executor(s). It was hard to think about it, though. They have even offered to help us get ( Read more... )

We have made wills and probably should do something about our Final Residence. An inevitable downsizing when we can no longer sustain this Blanchard Utopia should ease the burden of Stuff on our heirs.

We will have to do that as well, but it's going to be hard on TBG. He's got every book he's ever bought going back to age seven. So many books...

Emily and I chat about it since we follow Ask a Mortician. I'm hoping that aquamation or composting becomes legal in NJ sometime soon. If not, if I go before her, she'll likely have me wrapped in a shroud and tossed in a plot at Steelmantown. Green burials FTW

I know I need to change my insurance to make her the prime beneficiary sometime. Either way, nothing expensive and as Earth-friendly as possible

We have biodegradable urns. There was a choice of four various urns. I picked the one with autumn leaves.

I have made plans. I have a will in place along with all the other documents one might need for end of life situations such as a living will.

I've also made plans and paid for my cremation. When I'm gone, I don't want anyone to have to worry about all that. Just dealing with grief is bad enough.

What surprised me is that a DNR is no longer valid here. We have to have a paper signed by our GP authorizing them to let us go. It's called a POLST document. Yay, more paperwork...

I'm sure that's because they don't want to get sued by the family who doesn't agree with the DNR.

Not long after my parents died, I contracted with the Cremation Society for direct cremation and a cheap urn/vault to make the cemetery happy. I have a fully-paid-up funeral insurance policy to cover the contract cost. Dumping my ashes in the river would be cheaper, but Mom's family plot still has one open space and the perpetual care is paid for for as long as the cemetery exists, so I'm going to use that. My great-grandmother paid a whole $1 for those six graves so I'm not going to waste one.

I need to update my Will again. Main issue is that I need to get Moon into a local cat "retirement home" or the like if he outlives me because he does not do well in a cage and is going to be very hard to place since he doesn't like men, children, dogs, strangers, or noise.

My current POAs are an old college friend and my cousin. They both live in other states and they both take foreign vacations several times a year, so I hope one will be available if I need them. I had had a social service agency as my POA, but they decided they will no ( ... )

We're heading to The Big Island for our last resting place. It only seemed fitting for us.
