Having deliberately avoided even owning a TV after I left home in 1969, it was only when we acquired a laptop with DVD drive about 15 years ago that we started slowly catching up several good series that we missed at the time. For me that includes Sapphire and Steel, and Colditz, and not forgetting my rediscovery of the long-forgotten Man from UNCLE.
However, I confess I'm not a great fan of Downton Abbey or costume drama generally. Entertaining, extremely well made and acted, without doubt, but I find everything much too clean, and they peddle a far too complacent (and complaisant) view of this country's pernicious class divide, which still exists. 'Gosford Park', which I loved, did it better and much more subversively.
I have occasionally eaten fish and chips but they're usually a disappointment, so your experience in London doesn't surprise me at all. You have to go to Whitby.

I am enjoying show a lot and I'm glad that Maggie Smith isn't always a prig in it.
This was back in 1974/75, I think we were being test marketed
