IAMs is what we use....and our cats seem to like that. If Taffy's in a finicky mood then we just sprinkle a little bit of water on it and he eats it up. There you go. :-)
There have been many stories as to the origin of those cats. The people who own them may have left, or they may not have.
I'm not sure as to whether or not it was begging you for food, but it may have instead just gotten used to you. When I lived there it had plenty of food and continued to follow me up the staircase.
If you want to feed them, I'd recommend the dry kind, whatever they seem to like. If they don't look like they're losing weight, odds are someone else in the apartment area has food out for them.
My main advice, make sure your door is locked, I came back to my apartment to see the gray cat lounging on my couch. And a "present" to boot.
yeah i'm not too sure about the origin either, which is why i'm only feeding them every so often. the thing about the cat that day was that it wasn't so much just following me, but more like, following me, stopping in front, and then giving me the puss-in-boots look (except for the whole drawing the sword bit). the gray one did that like 3x. they look alright though.
