I'm so sorry :( I had to put down my cat a few years ago (she was just a couple of weeks shy of her 17th birthday) and it's so hard. But honestly...it is painless for them. They go to sleep and that's it. My cat had cancer and was in tremendous amounts of pain, which is why I decided to put her down. I couldn't stand it - she groaned with every movement and couldn't even climb stairs :\

Same with Fezzik...he was so weak and sick he couldn't lift his head. He cried and moaned constantly. It was just too heartbreaking.

If Spike is still eating a bit and acting more run-down than in pain, then there is no reason to put him down I think. And trust me - even if you're not physically there when he goes, he knows that you love him. You gave him the best life ever and he appreciates it. It sounds weird to say but pets know.
