26 + 1 Thinkies About "Sleeper"

Hey! Another new episode of Torchwood, just a week after the last one. One would think it was, y'know, a television show or something. Huh. Imagine that, somewhere in the world they have more on TV than reruns, reality shows and truly nasty political ads ( Read more... )

Maybe the wrist strap tells him some other time, like May of 1940 or something.

I'm sure Jack's manners probably leave some to be desired, because he's most used to a culture where pleasure is there for the taking. So he takes his pleasure (within the confines of consent) and expects that if his partner wants something they'll take it too. Us poor 21st century apes just aren't comfortable asking/taking. :D

I bet it's like, he can't program his VCR so his wrist strap keeps blinking "12:00" so he needs a watch. :D

Re: his manners about taking pleasure: I admit easily and often that I idealize Jack's sexuality, but I would think that "good, giving, game" (or the 51st century equivalent) is pretty much part of his modus operandi. You don't get a good rep and "repeat customers" and former lovers sending you Christmas cards if you're not as willing to give as you are to take. In fact, the whole give vs. take dichotomy kinda gives me the creeps. It's a very 21st century view of sex. I would hope that Jack is beyond that dualistic, zero-sum mindset.

I like the idea postulated above, that Jack simply makes Ianto nervous with his lack of tidiness. :D

ROFL. He's put a bit of electrical tape over the blinky numbers so Tosh won't make fun of him.

Oh, I think Jack's more than willing to give, in the sense of doing things for his partner. But what I'm saying is that for him it's a basic instinct to assume that if his partner isn't getting what they want, they'll ask for it, because that's what his 51st century self would do. And since as you say the 21st century acts on a zero-sum concept, we think that we shouldn't HAVE to ask, that good lovers just somehow should KNOW.

It's not anything conscious, for him; it's like living in a different culture, where the most basic, instinctive, unthinking assumptions can cause problems.

I would imagine that most 21st century people think he's marvelous but selfish in bed, while he thinks that they're marvelous but remarkably undemanding.

That's probably why the Doctor appeals -- the Doctor asks for what he wants, or takes it.

SPIDER YOU FREAK NOW I HAVE TO WRITE THIS FIC AND I HAVE ONE GIMPY ARM.
