Poll for Poll's Sake

Me = Bored At Work. Bumming around the Internets (what else is new?). Browing for curtains for the living room at Hole In The Wall. One whole wall is all windows and sliding glass door, and needs curtains desperately. Because HITW is basically a big white box, I need color in this place like chinga. And me being me, I'm thinking huge sweeping ( Read more... )

I happen to love *all* of those colors, and I'd go for Moss Green if it were my house and if I thought about those thing, but you want color. Eggplant will be black at night. Raspberry will just be a darker red. And it will glow against the white walls.

Yeah, Moss Green is always a good default color, but then, what if I want to paint the walls? I'd rather go for the YOWZA! color on the curtains and have the more neutral background on the walls. And what you say about how they'll look at night is very true, very interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!

And anyway, you don't have to think about those things for your house because you can think about them for my house, and you can have more fun because you don't have to pay for it or do the schleppy bits! :)

Exactly! Also, we prefer to decorate our house in piles of books and painting purchased at science fiction conventions. With all that going on, curtains just seem...busy. :)

LOL! Yah, well, most of the other walls will be bookshelves, but seriously, I have a big glass wall. And while I am not shy in the least, I am paranoid and I do like my privacy. Also, the wall of windows is *cold*.

Thank you for absolving me of the DIY-guilt! :D Yeah, purple is posh and that's one reason I'm considering it. You know what my old apartment looked like, lotsa dark wood and rich medieval jewel colors - either purple or dark red would look fab. Mamadeb has a nice point in her comment above that the dark red would just pop at night...

Huh. One would think that curtains are easy. Just big ol' rectangles with hems. Goes to show, what do I know?

BTW, love the icon. :D Lotsa pirates at Pennsic these days? LOL!

I'm going to be boring and ask what color your sofa is before you pick your curtains.

However, I also give you official blessing to just up and buy the damned curtains, because your time is valuable and fabric glue will *not* do the job. And by the time you buy what it takes to get the job done right, especially in velvet, you're not going to be saving that much money.

(Ye gods, sewing is like being a warhorse; one whiff of a discussion about fabric and I'm all over it. Don't ask about corsets or I'll never shut up.)

That's a totally legit question! The sofa is IKEA royal blue. It's on the site as the "FAGELBO corner sofa". (And yes, because I am 10 years old, I always read that as fag-elbow.) However, I've removed the back cushions and replaced them with big huge foofy pillows in kinda gold and rust colors. And I have Mexican rugs covering the seat cushions in black and white and grey and a kind of dark red. So the only part that's still "blue" is the back, but hey, I can cover that too! :)

The other furniture in my room tends to dark wood tones and medieval color tones, if that helps any.

Are you pro-sewing or anti-sewing?

Only if it's fabulous!

It's sounding like you might want the gold or red curtains, whatever goes with the pillows. Gold, being a sort of neutral, gives you a bigger range of what you can paint the walls, which could stay pale neutrals to show off the dark woods or could go into stronger colors and still show off the woods. (Not that I've got dark detailing in my living room, which is currently cream and will go green when the credit cards are paid off...)

Re: little snits in corsets: don't you *hate* that? I always hate that -- the idea that just because I'm older and heavier now, there's no way I was ever young and fabulous and pulling like a sailor. Sigh. Yes, kids, you invented kink; in fact, you invested sex. No, nobody ever wore a corset before you did, and time will stop for you, and you'll never get old and nobody will ever look at you the way you just looked at me. *snicker*

Yeah, when I was in the SCA I sewed. Nowhere near as well as Lamia or Ellid or some of the other people on my f-list who have Laurels and such, but enough to make me feel guilty for buying what's essentially pre-hemmed rectangles of fabric.

Curtainwise, I'm still between red and purple. The green or gold, as djinnj says below, could clash with the craptastic 1970s gold and avocado I've been cursed with in the kitchen and bath....

Sew them only if the cost savings is significant. I'd say only if the curtains you want cost 4x or more than how much it would cost to make them. Because lacking the proper tools will make this a much more complicated project; especially if you want proper lined curtains.

I said eggplant even though green is my favorite color because it's a rich color which is a less emphatic than raspberry. A blue/red isn't much warmer than a deep eggplant, but it pops a lot more. I prefer curtains to be a backdrop rather than drawing the eye away from the room ( ... )

Fabric glue (tacky glue - it dries clear and flexible) in a couple of straight-ish lines and I had curtains suitable for bathrooms or hallways.

Anythng more than that, buy the fuckers, Christmas Tree Shop has them at $10 a panel.

How heavy was the fabric? I'm thinking fabric glue won't be strong enough to hold up velvet, particularly if the curtains are actually opened and closed on a regular basis.

buy the fuckers

Amen!
