I haven't read fanfic in a big way for over a decade, but I can still relate to those who obsess over it, because being lost in a fanfic story -- usually where love abounds -- is such a wonderful place to be
( ... )
I discovered fanfic in my 50s. If I had known about it in my 20s, I think my brain would have imploded. I'm old enough now to feel completely comfortable about my guilty pleasures. As you say, once you accept that you love what you love and refuse to feel guilty about it, a huge shift happens in your life. As we get older we treasure the time spent doing things that are important to us rather than things we are "supposed" to do.
Here's to fanfic - the people who write it and the people who read it!
Beautifully put, Charlotte. I also started my fangirl life with Mr. Spock at age nine. Although I'd make up hurt/comfort scenarios in my head at night in order to fall asleep wrapped in a cocoon of friendship and love that real life never seemed to provide. I ended up writing poetry, never knowing about fanfiction till just four years ago.when I found it it was like coming home . Thank you, spencer babe, for such an uplifting post.

(Though it is a double-edged sword: smart phone + AO3 have more or less ruined my sleep. I. just. can't. stop.)
