It Is Perfectly Okay to Write Garbage-as Long as You Edit Brilliantly

Have you read "Killed the Cat" yet? I hear it's pretty good. Would you like to know more about how it came to be, my first story in five years? Of course you would!

It all started in December when amberlynne pimped the picfor1000 Challenge #6. For the longest time, I had been wanting to start writing again, but it turns out I can't make myself write for writing's ( Read more... )

Aren't thorough editors great? Terrifying, but great.

I liked your story. And I'm excited that you're excited.

I've never had an editor so thorough! In class, you'd get some people who would give pretty good comments and then some who would just write "Good job!" at the end.

There's that little (okay, pretty big) part of me that always wants them just to say, "That's perfect, you're amazing, don't change a word." But because that's unlikely to actually be true, it works out better when they tell you what's up. Even if it's horrifying to look at all the red marks.

By the way, I'm always up for reading things, if you ever want. I'm better at nitpicking than at general structural/thematic advice (though I'm trying to work on articulating those criticisms, too), but yeah.

>>Then I got hobviously's take, and there was red everywhere!

And that is why I warned you upfront!

>>I don't know whether any of you writers have your very own hobviously, but you should get one! They're very useful!

Helping you with your story reminded me of the good old days on mi.net, except with less capslocking at allit. It was fun AND it paid off because your story got totally cool. Editing is the best.

I was prepared and it still kicked me in the gut!

Aw, I'm glad you liked doing it! I was always afraid I was bothering you.

Heh, I've sort of been in the same headspace. On a creative high after my last photoshop project, and then all excited about what I will do next. Isn't being creative fun?

Also, the betas have names now. Hee.

It wasn't exactly the same because Cyrus was a scary nutbag with a very different motivation, but the basic conceit of "a character kills someone randomly" was there. It freaked me the hell out, like it was Cameron and I was Charley.
